My weakness surfaces

There was a doctor with a thin stack of fresh printed papers. She handed them to Ms. Pam who scanned each carefully. Telepathy through lead, telepathy while being talked to, telepathy while blindfolded... the list of variables went on.

I sat down in a chair as a scientist started the process of sticking wires on me. One engineer fashioned a head band to detect brainwaves. On the opposite chair Jayden was being wired and banded similarly to me.

"Same tests as last time, different variables." Ms. Pam gave Jayden the new picture sheet. The first time we did the control test. Next, though, she had a thin lead cover over her head that was suspended from the ceiling.

"First is the pictures, Ms. Pam?"

"Doctor Pam! We are called by our titles around here, Patient 004. Now just finish the test."

I looked in Jayden's eyes and recited the paper.

Jayden started talking for the next test. I had to identify each lie she said.

"Yesterday I played Mario cart while you tested—"

"Lie, you played Apocalypse 2 and ate a tuna sandwich." Jayden nodded after I answered.

"I also read a few chapters of Harry Potter—"

"Nine and ten of The Prisoner of Azkaban," I said. We finished the lying test with another perfect score.

The next result was unexpected.

Jayden was given a pair of blindfolds and had to think of a sentence. I couldn't extract a single thought from her head. The docs did more advance testing, but as long as her eyes were covered, I couldn't read her mind.

They found a weakness, but that wasn't the worst part.

The worst part was that Zander had a pair of titanium blindfolds that protected him from blinding other people. The only way to save him was to look into his blinding eyes.
