Jayden ran through the door and tackled me in a hug. "You're alive!" she said. Then she turned to the man. "Luis, give us a minute, please?"
"Very well," he said. The glass doors opened and Luis walked through. He paused as mist coated his body and then exited to a door I couldn't see.
Jayden backed up and studied me. I noticed that she wasn't wearing a yellow chemical suit, only a hospital gown. Her hair had grown a few inches and now it fell over her shoulder. Dang, that bruises, she thought. I'd have to tell her about my mind reading ability.
"Hold still," she said. I hope this works. She put her hand on my bruise and I felt a quick shot of pain and cried out. My nerves felt ignited and then the pain was gone
And the bruise was healed.
"How the hell?" I asked. Jayden looked me over one more time before answering.
"I don't know. I woke up four weeks after the accident and when I touched a bruise on an apple and it disappeared. I can heal humans, too if their awake, but that's not the weirdest part."
I was too scared to ask, but she held up her hand. "It wasn't supposed to heal for a few months," she said. Her wrist wasn't broken.
"There's more," Jayden said her voice full of sorrow, "Charlie didn't make it out alive."
I let that sink in and as I did, fresh tears clouded my vision. My best friend, basically my family, dead. We went through school together, learned all about each other. He's the one who got Zander to ask me out and the one who had my back for high school bullies. He'd been the one who fought a guy for me after he broke up with me. Without Charlie, I felt, empty.
"What happened?" I sobbed. I never cry, so this was kind of a horrible experience for me. I was the tough rebel, not a baby. I felt like crap without Charlie, though.
"From what the Docs say, radioactivity got into our systems. Charlie got radiation sickness and passed away two days later. For some reason, none of us got sick, but we each have high levels of radiation in us making it unsafe for people to be near us."
I thought about going back to sleep and waking up from this crazy dream. Charlie couldn't be dead, I couldn't read minds and Jayden's wrist couldn't have healed so fast.
I bet she doesn't believe me, Jayden thought as she put a hand on her arm. Wait until she hears about Zander.
"What about Zander?" I asked. Jayden snapped her head up. Did you just read my mind? She thought.
"Yes," I said out loud.
"How the hell did you do that?" Jayden asked shaking her head.
"Same way you can heal just by touching, I guess. Now, what about Zander?" I demanded. I may have been in a coma for eight months but after hearing about Charlie, I couldn't find it in myself to believe that Zander was dead too. I had to find out if he was ok.
"You should see for yourself when you can walk again. Maybe he'll come and tell you himself." Don't think, she thought over and over again. Rats, she found out how to block a mind reading.
She was right, though he did come to see me.
It was the scariest moment of my life.
