I sat in Church as I listened to my father, trying to prevent myself from sobbing too loud. My father was the minister at our church. He was preaching as usual, but this week was completely different.
I wasn't sitting bored out of my mind while I made funny faces at my best friend Rusty who was across the room from me with her parents.
My Father was preaching about my dead brother. and his four friends.
They had been out partying one weekend night, just like any other teenager their age. they had all been drinking and dancing to their favourite music, when they decided that it was time to come home. My brother, Bobby, was the one driving while his girlfriend was in the passenger seat beside him. Two girls and a boy in the back seat. They weren't driving fast, no. but they came to a bridge when the chorus of their favourite song came on, bobby and his friends began to dance and shout. bobby took his eyes off the road for a moment to kiss his girlfriend, when suddenly a massive truck came and went straight into them, sending the car flying and landing upside down.
They all died that night.
"No parent should ever have to know the horror of having to bury their own child, and yet, five of bolmont's brightest have lost their lives." My Father preached, tears trying to spill out of his eyes, "Among them, my only son. Bobby."
My Mother put her arm around me, kissing me softly on the side of my head as we held each other.
"We have other children to raise here, one day they will not be in our care. They will belong to the world, a world filled with evil. But, until that day they are ours to protect." My Father looked at me, I was the only child he had left. "That is the lesson to be taken from this tragedy."
My father sat down beside the few other men. A man took over from my Father and spoke into the microphone so everyone would hear him, "These measures will be voted on accordingly. Any child under the age 18 will have a curfew of being home for 10pm on weeknights and 11pm on weekends. All in favour say Aye."
"Aye" All eight of the men said together as they lifted their hands up for a few seconds.
The next man, who was sitting beside the man who was just finished talking, spoke up next, "Anyone who arranges anything that younger people are invited, will be arrested if they are doing inappropriate activities. This activities including consuming alcohol, taking drugs, listening to music or taking part in dancing activities. All in favour say Aye."
"Aye." The eight men said together, yet again.
"There will be no dancing unless they are supervised by an adult for a school activity or such. Public dancing in Bolmont will be considered going against the law. All in favour say Aye."
Again, seven men agreed, "Aye."
My Father was the only one who hadn't replied yet as he was staring at me. He knew that I didn't agree with this particular rule. Children should never be banned to listen to music or dance.
"Reverent?" The Man who asked the question spoke. My Father took his eyes of me for a second to look at the man who said his name, "Your vote please?"
"Aye." He said quietly as he raised his hand.
He looked back at me but I couldn't look him in the eye. I was so angry and shocked. It should be against the law to tell teenagers they can't listen to music or dance whenever they want.
I knew something was going to be done, I just didn't expect it to be so harsh.
I looked over at Rusty who had her head down, obviously sad about not only the new laws, but about my brother. Rusty was so close to me and my family and she was practically Bobby and I's sister as she didn't have any siblings of her own.
I knew that from this day forward, there was going to be a lot of sneaking around.
And I didn't know what to think about that.
