It was a Saturday, Michael, Woody and I had nothing better to do so we decided this would be the perfect time to teach Michael how to dance. Well, Woody and I did anyway. It took us about half an hour before we finally got Michael to agree to dance, "Alright, you're not gonna tell anyone about this?"
"No, I'm not going to tell anyone." I assured, as Woody and I shared a smile at each other.
"I'm serious Luke," Michael groaned as he began to walk away from me, back to were he had been previously sitting.
"I'm serious too, I promise! Just follow the girls." I said as I pulled him back so he was standing beside Sarah and Anna, who were going to be teaching him the simple steps, "They know what they're doing, and you don't."
"Woody anyone on the football team, I'm seriou-" Michael warned him as Woody shushed him, telling him that nobody was going to find out.
Michael glared at the both of us for a moments while I turned on the radio, so they would have something to dance to.
"Everybody will know." Woody whispered to me as soon as Michael looked away, making me shake my head as we laughed at the two small girls shouting at Michael for not knowing a single thing.
"One, Two, Three, Four." Sarah counted in as they moved from side to side, Michael awkwardly copying them.
"Come on man, you've got to come in." I sighed as the girls had started dancing and Michael just stared at them hopelessly, "Don't mess around, Focus."
Sarah and Anna began to shake their bodies to the music as Michael followed their lead, trying his best to keep up with them.
"That's it. Shake, shake." Woody cheered as Michael began to get better and better at what he was being taught to do.
"More hips, come on! Show em' what you got." I laughed as Michael followed my advice, moving his hips a lot more.
It was quite funny seeing Michael dance - Not because of how he danced as he wasn't even bad, but because we had never seen him dance before. He would never even try to dance with us so this was a huge shock that he was actually attempting to learn right now.
"Okay, maybe a little less hips." Woody shouted as Michael began to go a little over the top with his hip movements.
"And we're jumping!" Michael commented as he and the two girls began to jump around the yard when the chorus came on.
After a few weeks, with the help from Sarah and Anna, Woody and the rest of the football team, I finally had Michael dancing like a pro - he was almost as good as dancing as me and I have been dancing for years!
I was currently lying in my room, trying to come up with what I was going to say for the speech in front of the entire town.
Aunt Jess had came into my room and she had been watching me for the last few minutes, "Getting names on this petition is one thing, but trying to write this speech, I'm just having a hard time with it." I sighed as she sat down on my bed.
"Well I saw you enlisted my daughters in your campaign." Jess laughed as she pulled one of the posters Ariel had made for me out from her pocket.
"I'm sorry about that!" I apologised, feeling my cheeks heat up instantly at her playfully eye roll.
"No, no need to apologise. I think this family could use a little activism." She shrugged as she continued studying the small poster.
"Yeah? What about uncle Wes?" I asked, he would probably be annoyed with me for joining the girls into all of this, "He seems a little worried."
"Well, Wesley, he is a car salesman trying to sell cars in the middle of a recession so he's all about worry." Jess explained as she watched me closely for a few moments, "Why is this dance so important to you?"
I leaned forward, knowing that this question was going to have to be answered at some point, "When my Dad left, I wasn't really surprised. I never really thought I could depend on a guy any way. It was just me and Mum y'know? She was the strong one" I whispered, "And then she got sick, it was my turn to be strong. I thought if I worked really hard and listened to the doctors and did everything they told me to do, then maybe we could turn it around - Maybe she'd get better. But she didn't. All that hard work and I couldn't even change anything. But with this," I explained reaching for the petition, "thinking I could do something. I can do something for myself this time, maybe have a shot at making a change. That's all I want, a shot. Otherwise, I'm just going to disappear like everyone else."
"Can I see that petition please?" Jess asked quietly as she wiped her eyes quickly.
I handed her the petition, curious to what she would want with it, "You've got my vote, Luke Hemmings." She smiled as she wrote her name down before handing me back the sheet, walking over to me and kissing my forehead, "Your mama would be so proud."
I couldn't help smiling after that, thinking about how proud my Mother really would be if I was to win this and change the law.
I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong, I was only doing something that everyone teenager in this town wanted to do, but where too scared.
I was going to make this town realise what mistakes they have made with the law over the last couple of years, not only for my friends or my mum, but for me too.
It was time to finally do something that was going to make myself happy - it was time to challenge the law against no dancing.
