It turns out I was wrong.
My dad wasn't waiting for me when I got home but, Courtney was.
I parked the Jeep in our driveway and slowly walked up the stairs not wanting to face the storm I was about walk into. I'd quietly opened the door and put the keys back on the rack. Surprisingly nobody was in the living room, so I walked up stairs to my room.
Just when I thought I was off the hook I opened the door and found Courtney sitting on my bed. Her black hair was thrown in to messy bun and her make up was smeared around her eyes in dark rings. She sat cross-legged on my bed hugging one of my pillows. As I quietly shut the door she looked up.
She didn't say anything as I sat down next to her and leaned against the back of my bed. She quietly laid her head on my shoulder and after I few seconds I felt her tears start to drip onto my shirt. I closed my eyes painfully and put my arm around her shaking shoulders. Letting out a deep breath I opened my eyes and looked down at her.
"I'm so sorry Court. I-I don't know what came over me." I whispered softly. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and sniffed a little.
"I know. You were angry. You have every right to be Casper. We all do." She said. There was no anger or irritation in her voice just...defeat. "I just wish that for once things could go back to how they used to be. I want him to want to be home with us. I want him to take us surfing again, I want him to scare the guys' I bring home," She laughed a little and looked at me, "even though you do a pretty good job at that, and I just-I want him to be our dad again." She said softly. I pulled her closer and didn't say anything. We sat there in a quiet understanding for a long time. Or at least I think it was a long time. It could have been minutes but, it felt like hours.
After a while she slipped out of my arms and went to her room to sleep. I laid down and stared at the ceiling. Different emotions rushing threw me as my thoughts went wild.
Anger at my father.
Disappointment at my lack of self control.
Confusion at well...everything to do with Raegan.
But, most of all my gratefulness for Courtney.
Yeah we don't always get along but, she's my sister. If it wasn't for her than I don't think I'd ever be able to get through these kind of things. She always has my back and whether she wants it or not I'll always have hers. Same goes for Carter. They're my family. I need them.
I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
The next morning I woke up a little earlier than normal and walked out to the shed. I decided to wax down some boards before I went on dawn patrol with Eric. My board was still at the shack but, the other boards need attention too.
