Chapter 36

"I just want to start showing.." I whine to Rebekah from across the room.

"Your time will come, every woman's body is different" Rebekah says, probably trying to get me to shut up.

"Penelope, I came to talk to you" The witch Agnes says as she walks into the room.

"Hey Agnes, what's going on?" I ask her curiously.

"I wanted to talk to you about going to a doctor" Agnes says as she sits down on the couch.

"Agnes, we've had this conversation before. I feel fine, and my baby is fine too" I assure her. She glares at me.

"You are overdue for a check up" Agnes says, still keeping her glare firmly on me.

"What am I gonna do? Pop into the Quarter for a quick ultrasound? Marcel already knows who I am, it's only a matter of time before he knows I'm pregnant with the baby Jesus. Oh yeah, a pregnant werewolf escorted by a witch, nothing to see here!" I say sarcastically.

"A lot of women would kill to have a child. It strikes me as odd that you're not taking better care of yours" Rebekah says envious of my pregnancy.

"I know a doctor out in the bayou, off a beaten path. Now, I took the liberty of making an appointment for you. Tonight, after hours, just us. Vampires will never get word of it" Agnes tells me. I put my hand on my stomach.

"Shouldn't Klaus be there? I mean he is the baby's father" I say as I run my fingers over my stomach.

"If Klaus comes out there with us, the vampires will know, putting your life in danger" Agnes reminds me. I let out a sigh.

"Fine, Bayou baby doctor it is"

"Agnes I don't know about this, it seems a little bit, hill billy-ish" I say to her as we arrive at the clinic. 

"Dr. Paige is only out this far because Marcel kept terrorizing her clients. Go, see how your baby is doing, she won't bite" Agnes tells me. I smile and nod.

"You're right, I'll see you in there" I say as I get out of the car. I head into the clinic and introduce myself to Dr. Paige. She's super nice actually. She takes my baby's heart rate.

"Your baby's heart rate is perfect" Dr. Paige says smiling at me.

"Awesome. I'm glad to hear that my baby girl is healthy" I say smiling happily. Dr. Paige smiles and hands me a tissue to wipe the gel off my stomach. I wipe it off and throw it into the garbage.

"That's a unique birthmark" Dr. Paige says looking at my crescent birthmark. 

"Thanks.. So are we good here?" I ask her as I pull my sweater on.

"Your blood pressure is a little high, I have something you can take for that" She says as she leaves the room. My phone goes off. It's a text from Rebekah.

'Where are you?'  It reads.

'Bayou clinic with doctor' I text her back as the doctor comes back into the room. I see Agnes talking to some very suspicious men. Suddenly I hear a wolf howl, startling me.

"You know what Doctor, I'll just do some push ups to get my blood pressure down" I say getting up.

"It's okay, this will only take a minute" The doctor says preparing something in front of her. I look back at Agnes and the men talking. Something is wrong. My heart rate speeds up. When I turn back the doctor is lunging at with a syringe, trying to stick me. I grab her and smash her head on one of the counters, grabbing the syringe from her hand and sticking her with it in her neck. The men start dashing towards the door but I close it on them locking them out. I look dartingly at the window and wiggle it open, making my escape. I run and run. I need to protect my baby, at all costs.

I see the men that were hunting me in the clinic. I patiently wait behind a tree as they pass me. I make my move, ready to fight. I kick the one man in the back of the knee, causing him to fall to the ground where I snap his neck. Being a werewolf increases my strength, which is a bonus. I get the attention of the other three men. The second one lunges towards me. I quickly grab a large branch and hit him over the head with it, knocking him to the ground unconscious. The other two men look at me challengingly.

"Come get some, fuckers" I snarl at them. One charges at me but I turn my body and he runs right past me, giving me access to grab a knife they dropped on the ground and plunge it into his back, I pull it out and then stab the fourth guy in the chest. Both of them fall to the ground. I crouch down as the adrenaline over takes me and I feel my eyes change color. I look around to see if anything else is coming at me. Suddenly I hear a body drop behind me. I turn and see that Rebekah has snapped a fifth man's neck.

"Have to say, I'm impressed" Rebekah says.

"Well, when you are a mother fighting for your child's life, you do things you never though that you would do. How did you find me?"

"Your text got me halfway, vamping here did the rest. Who are they?" Rebekah asks as we look at the men on the ground.

"Witches, Warlocks, I don't know, Agnes set me up" I growl. Rebekah looks at something in the distance.

"There's more of them. Run!" Rebekah tells me. I begin to run, not looking back. Suddenly I hear shots being fired and I see Rebekah fall to the ground.

"Rebekah!" I shout, but then I feel a sharp pain in my shoulder, before everything goes dark.

I walk towards the clinic, exhausted, and weary. I stagger up the walkway. I see Rebekah and Klaus run towards me, concerned.

"Penelope! What happened? Tell me what happened" Klaus demands concerned as he grabs my arms to keep me up.

"I can't remember" I say groggily. Klaus begins to examine my body for any wounds, lifting my shirt, examining my back and torso.

"You've completely healed. There's not a scratch on you" Klaus says confused.

"One of the perks of being a werewolf I guess" I say weakly.

"No, impossible. Not that fast" Klaus says as he begins to search for more wounds, poking and prodding my body. Rebekah speeds towards me and places a protective arm around me.

"Leave her alone, Nik!" Rebekah snaps shoving Klaus off. "Wait, it's the baby. Nik, it's the baby. The baby's vampire blood healed her" Rebekah comes to the realization. She turns to me. "Your own child healed you" Rebekah mutters out, Klaus looking in astonishment. "How did you escape? Outnumbered? unarmed? Those men were ripped to shreds!"

"I think.. I think it was a wolf. It was protecting me" I mutter weakly. Klaus looks angry and he points at me.

"The witches were supposed to protect you! When I get my hands on Sophie Deveraux" Klaus threatens.

"It wasn't Sophie" Rebekah corrects him.

"It was Agnes" I confirm.

"Fine! Agnes! Sophie! It's all the same to me! I'll slaughter the lot of them!" Klaus says angrily.

"Not if Elijah gets there first" Rebekah reminds him. My head perks up.

"Elijah? Where is he? Did you find him?" I ask concerned.

"He's been in contact and he has a plan. All he asks is that we take care of you" Rebekah assures me. I smile at Klaus and Rebekah.

"I'm just going to head to the car, I'm tuckered out" I say as I stagger away. I feel my knees buckle and myself going down, but someone catches me.

"Ooh, I've got you love, I've got you" Klaus's reassuring voice says, before I drift off into sleep.
