It was never a choice. Then again nothing ever is, is it? My existence on this planet certainly wasn't a choice. I was an accident, my parents never wanted kids, they certainly didn't want me.
But one thing that 100% wasn't a choice was me being born the way I am today. A freak. A weirdo. A Mutant. I've only ever met two people like me, and that was my adopted brothers, Alex and Scott Summers. Though now Alex had put himself in solitary confinement in fear that he would hurt someone with his powers.
This had caused me to become isolated to the room Scott and I shared, much to their parent's dismay. I was never very close to their parents, they said I was dangerous after the way Alex found me, choking on my own blood, hands glowing a purple color and eyes to match. It was right after I killed the people who murdered my parents and my little brother.
That's how I got here. Alex was walking around the city when he found me on my death bed. He had picked me up and rushed me to his home, knowing that a hospital wouldn't help someone like me. Us.
That brought me to where I was now. Sitting on my bed watching Scott continue reading his book. After about an hour of him glancing at me from behind his book, I decided I was becoming too pale and sick looking due to the lack of sun. "Why don't you put that book down and take a walk to the park with me?" I offered, standing up and stretching, smirking when I felt the satisfying 'pop' of my bones.
"No, you go. Unlike you, I've been there everyday after school. You need the sun, sis. I do not." Scott replied with a matter of fact tone.
"When did you start calling me that...Y-you're not supposed to. You're parents would kill me-" He then cut me off by slamming his book shut.
"You've lived with us since before I was born. You and I have gotten pretty close. Of course I'm going to call you my sister. You practically are." He paused, opening the book back up to the page he was on. "I'll deal with them if they ask. Now go outside, you're starting to look dead."
I rolled my eyes and ruffled his hair before walking down the stairs with my flannel shirt in my hand. Hopefully their parents weren't home.
"Goodness, Beth! Please tell me you're going to get some sun?" Their mother asked, oddly petting my hair and kissing my cheek. "You're quite cold, honey. I won't hold you here much longer, go get some fresh air!" She then patted me on the shoulder and shuffled out of the kitchen.
I blinked and turned to look at where she disappeared to, wondering if that had really just happened. I shrugged it off and pulled my flannel on before walking out the front door. As soon as the warm rays of the sun hit my face, I smiled. I couldn't remember the last time I'd been outside, and I wasn't going to rush to get back inside.
Shoving my hands into the pockets of my pants, I slowly walked the short three minutes to the park and sat down on a swing. I closed my eyes in pleasure of how nice the weather was and I began to swing. I know it's childish, but you're never too old to play on a swing. Never.
"Is this seat taken, Beth?" A voice asked from my left side.
I opened my eyes and looked at him through squinted eyes as he was standing in front of the sun. "How do you know my name...? I don't remember ever meeting you, and I'm sure I would. I never forget a face." Just like the bloodied faces of them men I killed to avenge my family. I thought to myself.
"I've been keeping my eyes on you for a very long time Ms. Everette." He responded, sitting on the swing next to me, tired of waiting for me to accept his invitation.
I guffawed and looked at him once more. "What is that supposed to impress me? You sound like a stalker to me."
"Yet you are still talking to me." He said with a slight smile. "I'm Charles Xavier. Perhaps you've heard of me with all the research you've done on Mutants the past couple of years?"
I averted my eyes to the ground and dug the toe of my shoes into the dirt ground below me. "How do you know all of this? Did someone send you?"
"I sent myself. You mustn't lament over the loss of your family. I know it's hard, trust me. But what you did to those men.. That doesn't define who you are." He paused, waiting for me to blow up on him. He continued when the explosion never came. "I know you have no reason to trust me but." He paused once more. "I'm just like you." I heard in my head.
My head shot up and I suddenly felt myself using my ability. I whipped my head around to face him and my purple eyes met his blue ones. "You don't know what the hell you're talking about! You don't know shit about me!" I then stood and clenched my hands into fists until my knuckles turned white. "Now tell me how you know who I am and what I've done or so help me-"
"I already did tell you. Your name is Beth Everette, your parents were Tom and Elizabeth Everette, you found out you were a mutant when you were 16-" He stopped talking when he noticed the tears falling from my eyes. "And you're not in total control of your powers... And it pains you.."
I unclenched my fists and my eyes returned to their natural color of brown. "Why are you here?"
Charles smiled softly and pulled a tissue from his pocket, which I gently took and wiped my eyes with. "I'm here to bring you to safety."
"I am in safety. I live with very nice people. They're like a family to me." I explained, beginning to walk away from him.
"Beth, I mean safety for people like us. Telepaths. Mutants... I can help you control your powers." He said walking after me.
I stopped in my tracks and turned to him. "I'm not leaving Scott... I-... He's just starting to understand why I did what I did to those men... I can't just disappear and throw all of that away, he'll think I'm lying to protect myself."
"I'm sure he'll understand." Charles said tapping a finger to his temple.
"He's only five! And what would I tell them when I just up and leave, hm?" I asked. "I'm not going with you. Just forget you ever figured out who I was.. I can't leave. I won't, actually. Now goodbye, Charles. Leave me alone and go home." I said before running back to the house and locking the door behind me.
"Whoa what happened to you?" I heard the voice of Scott behind me.
I smiled sadly and sniffled. "Nothing, go read your book."
He looked at me with uncertainty before walking to the living room and turning on the tv.
"That doesn't sound like reading!" I said laughing.
"You don't sound like reading either, I've been reading all day!"
I shook my head, beginning to walk up the stairs. "You know, you're pretty sassy for a five year old."
