"The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary. Men alone are capable of every wickedness."

-Joseph Conrad

Avery was still standing right by me when everyone else stood up and we touched down on the ground, which made us wobble slightly, but Chance was a better pilot than a driver I guess. It was good to have him by me, even though I could see the eyes of the determined Stained as we opened the door.

Avery and I split up and I had already tossed a fireball to one of the Stained who had decided to charge towards us as Sean and the others got off. I could see Avery doing something off to my left, but I couldn’t tell what, all I knew was that the longer we waited, the harder it would be to do this.

“Sean, we have to go!” I shouted as I pulled him over to me by his sleeve and started to make a run for the door.

We opened it to find four Stained standing there, two with guns and the other two with a ball of fire in each palm.

I knew that there was a special flammable substance in the guns that the scientists had created specifically to make the bullets more harmful, the whole thing had always confused me, but I suddenly wished I’d learned more. I pulled Sean to the ground with me as the bullets started flying. He sent a bolt of lightening to all four of them in quick succession and I stood up and ran to them, quickly grabbing the guns and the grenades they had in the pouches on their belts.

Our luck stopped then. I should’ve known we wouldn’t get too far without something going wrong, it had been idiotic for me to even think we could get out alive.

The doors opened and Stained began to emerge. I looked down at the grenade that was still in my hand and looked up at the steadily advancing enemy. I pulled the pin and let it fly into the center of the crowd, which wasn’t nearly far enough away and grabbed the back of Sean’s head and threw him to the ground. I didn’t waste any time in covering his body with mine and covering our heads with my arms as the explosion happened.

There were screams of pain and blood had splattered everywhere. I could feel it along my arms and soaking into my shirt. These were people I was supposed to be saving.

Sean was shocked and tried getting up, but I forced his head back against the tile. “Stay down. It’s not over yet. This was one that was made shortly before I left, it had an after explosion to try and kill survivors.”

A few seconds later the sounds of a second explosion happen, this time sending metal, concrete, and tile everywhere. I felt a sharp, searing pain in my thigh, but heard nothing other than my yell of pain except for a few dying groans and short ragged breathing of the few who were unlucky enough to survive the second blast.

Sean pushed me off and I looked down to try and see past the blurriness the pain had caused. “What the hell was that?” He shouted. “You could’ve killed us!”

I kept looking at my leg as the fog that clouded my eyes slowly disappeared and I could see clearly once again. A piece of metal had embedded itself into my leg and left the fabric of my pants slowly becoming darker and damper. “I know.” I growled as I contemplated pulling it out or leaving it. If I didn’t pull it from my leg then it could become a hassle, but it would help stop the bleeding.
