Chapter Twelve

The beach was busy as Niall and I walked hand and hand along the shore, clutching our towels in one hand we had found an ideal spot and had set our towels down before racing into the water.

“What do you want to do when you finish school, Ava?” Niall asked as he floated next to me.

“I want to be a journalist. I have always loved writing so why not, right?”

“What type of stuff do you write about?”

“Love, mainly.”

“Have you ever been inlove?”

“No, I have never even had a boyfriend.” I said smiling and rolling my eyes.

Niall’s mouth dropped open.

“Are you serious?”

“Yes, why would I joke about that?”

“I don’t know. I’m just shocked, you are so beautiful.”

I blushed and swam over to Niall, locking my arms around his neck. I shivered as I felt his hands naturally grip my waist.

“Have you ever been inlove?” I asked curiously.

“Does food count?”

I laughed and shook my head.

“Then no, I haven’t. Not yet anyway.”

I closed my eyes and felt the sun’s rays on my skin and before I could open them Niall’s soft lips were on mine. We hadn’t kissed since the night under the stars and honestly, I had been craving it.

He pulled back and kissed my cheek then in one quick movement he dunked me underwater laughing.

We tanned for 2 more hours before I had to go home. My mom was taking me out to lunch at the beach café we had talked about.

By the time I got home my mom was ready and waiting. I ran upstairs and changed out of my damp clothes and into a pale blue dress and met my mom at the car.

“You ready?”

I nodded my head yes and jumped in.

The ride to the café had little talking as we had blared the music the whole way, rapping ‘Super bass’ and screeching ‘You belong with me.’ My mom is so cool.

“Have Mia and Dad gone for ice-cream?” I asked as we finished ordering.

“Yes, I think so, and then to the boardwalk.” My mom answered, taking a sip of her water.

“So, how’s Niall?” she asked with an excited grin.

I smiled and blushed, avoiding her eyes.

“He’s fine.” I mumbled.

She laughed before speaking again.

“Come on, tell me.”

“I really like him, mom. He’s funny and polite and I’m comfortable with him,” I say as I count the points on my fingers. “It’s like I’ve known him forever.”

“You know,” she began as she twirled a strand of blonde hair around her finger. “When I met your dad I felt that way too. He understood me and it was like I had found my missing half, but no one saw it that way, not my mom, or my sister or even my best friend! To them it was just another summer romance that would soon fade, but I knew how I felt about him…” she trailed off and looked into the distance before continuing.

“That year I left home, I ran away. I left a note on my bed explain that I was going back to the states to be with him. I haven’t been back since.”

I stared at her, shocked. I didn’t know that part of the story.

‘Ava, no matter what anyone says, ever, listen to your heart, it’s always right. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be looking at you right now…”

Our conversation was converted back to casual chit-chat when our food came, but I was still thinking about what my mom had said. It had been a week and a half but I knew deep down, I was falling inlove with Niall.

That was the summer I met NiallWhere stories live. Discover now
