Chapter Five

“So you are from Mullingar, Ireland?”

“That is correct.”

“And you are here for the summer with your friends?”

“Yes, until 21 September.”

I smiled at Niall from across the table and dug my spoon deeper into my ice-cream and pulling out a mound of caramel. Shoving it into my mouth I looked up and crossed my eyes at him causing him to laugh.

“Are you always this weird?”

“Yes, I think I am.”

I picked up my napkin and reached across the table to wipe a smear of chocolate on the right of Niall’s smiling mouth. I giggled as I took note of his crooked teeth, somehow they made him a lot more attractive.

I finished my ice-cream as Niall talked about his family back in Ireland and asked me about mine and all too soon we were walking towards the entrance to pay.

I reached down for the money my mom had given to me and handed it to the cashier.

“Nope, it’s on me. I’m the one that nearly knocked you over, remember?”

“But Niall-“

“No buts!”

I pouted and reluctantly placed the money back in my pocket.

“Oh shoot, I still have to buy dessert for my family” I said just as were were walking out the door. Turning around I quickly walked back to the counter.

“what should I get them?” I mumbled to Niall as I stared at the variety.

“Chocolate. Everyone likes chocolate.”

I smiled at him before he pulled it out the freezer and placed it on the counter. I quickly paid for it and felt my heart flutter as Niall grabbed the packet containing the ice-cream and opened the door and signaling for me to go first.

The air was hot and humid compared to inside the shop and I turned to face him on the busy promenade. Niall took a step closer, laughing as he just managed to dodge a passing child on rollerblades.

“Please come tomorrow night, Ava.”

“I will try.”

“Say you promise.” Niall said as he held out his pinky.

I linked mine with his and kissed my hand.

“I promise.
