Chapter Three
I opened the screen and walked outside into the morning sunshine that had lit up the porch. Smiling, I caught sight of my dad throwing a ball to my sister on the beach and my mom a few feet away reading a magazine. I pulled off my clothes and ran down to the beach in my favorite yellow bikini. Flopping down on to the sand my mom looked up and smiled at me.
“Good morning.”
I glanced at what she was reading before smiling back.
“Morning. Did you and Dad have fun last night?”
“Yes thanks, we found this adorable beach café a few miles from here, I’ll take you for lunch there sometime if you want?”
“Sounds good.” I smiled.
“Did Mia behave last night?”
“She was asleep before we even got home!”
My mom laughed and turned the page she was reading before looking back over to me.
“Ava, I know you can think of better things to do with your summer, but it will get better I promise, I’m sure you’ll make friends here soon.”
I turned and watched as my Dad picked Mia up over his shoulder and run with her screaming into the clear water.
I smile half-heartedly. “I know mom, I love it here, I do, but it gets a bit lonely sometimes, being here for the while summer and all.”
She smiled sympathetically, showing off her perfect white teeth.
“Well, to give you something to do, do you want to take a walk down to the ice-cream parlor and pick out a tub for dessert tonight, the neighbors’ are joining us.”
“Sure”
“And you can pick out one for yourself for the walk back” She added as she handed me some money.
I stood up and dusted off my bikini bottoms and ran back up to the house to grab my shorts and shirt before running back onto the beach and making my way down the shore to the main pier a few miles away.
