Chapter Two

The boardwalk was bright and busy. I grabbed my sisters hand and began pushing myself through the crowds of teenagers, parents and young children.

“Stay close” I said over my shoulder as we made our way towards the carnival games.

Mia pulled me towards one and turned to face me, waiting for money. I blew a strand of wet hair out of my eyes as I dug in my jean pocket for the dollars. My hair had not yet dried from my shower and I wore faded blue jeans with my favorite light blue hoodie. I have never been a girl who enjoys wearing make-up and tonight was no exception as my face was bare.

“Are you going to play too?”

I smiled at the challenge in my sister’s voice and looked down at her scrunched up freckled nose.

“Sure, why not? Ready to loose?” I teased.

“You wish, Ava! Go!”

We began furiously flinging small plastic balls into a smiling clowns mouth and laughing hysterically as we missed. The circus music was getting faster and faster causing me to panic.

“I’m winning!” Mia shrieked.

“Not for long!”

The bell sounded signaling the end of our turn and I took a big step back, throwing my hands up in defeat and laughing. I felt my body collide with another and I swung around ready to apologize only to meet the most beautiful stare I had ever seen in my life.

“Sorry!”

The boy glanced back as he apologized but continued walking at a swift pace, and the blue eyed stare disappeared into the crowd as quickly as it had come.

“That was rude of him.” Mia commented as she began pulling of pieces of the cotton candy she had just bought.

I pulled myself out of my daze and smiled.

“What do you want to do next?”

Mia dragged me over to the merry-go-round and waited patiently as I dug around in my pockets for more change. Handing me her cotton candy she smiled at the man who took her money and ran quickly to clamber onto a brightly painted horse.

“Have fun!” I shouted after her before the music began playing and the ride slowly started to move.

I walked slowly over to an empty bench and sat down picking at the cotton candy. My mind kept flashing back to the blue eyed stare no matter how many times I tried to shake it off.

He was blonde. Or brunette? Or both? The light had made it hard to tell but I was sure there was a bit of blonde. His skin was fair and flawless and he was a little bit taller than me and when he spoke that one word it was obvious he was not from around here, but his eyes, a clear blue, they were beautiful.

In the distance I watched as Mia climbed quickly of the painted horse and ran to the rides exit, thanking the man with a massive grin. I smiled as she ran over to me, her green eyes wide with excitement as she came to a stop next to me, covering a yawn with the pack of her hand.

“Come one, we’ve been here for over an hour, let’s get you home.”

I allowed her to jump on my back and slowly began the short walk back to the beach house.
