Chapter 2
I woke up drenched in cold sweat and gasping for air the next morning. I got up and went to the bathroom. I washed my face and stared at the mirror for awhile. My hair was sticking up all over the place, but at the moment I really didn't care. I have to calm down. I told myself. Because if I don't, I'll have a panic attack and no one would probably find me. I took deep breaths and let them out slowly, until it got to the point where I felt light headed and dizzy. Then I washed my face again. The cold water feels good against my skin. Then I heard a knock on my door. I brushed my hair out quickly and went to the door and opened it. Allie was standing there with some clothes. She was smiling as always. "Good morning. I brought you some clothes. They might be a little big on you, but you don't have to worry about that for long, because Dr. Reeves said we could go shopping for some clothes today."
"Okay. Thanks." I said as I took them.
"Come down to breakfast when you're done, okay?" She sounds like I'm going to make a break for it or something. I just nodded and she turned and walked away. I closed my door and went to my bathroom. I put the clothes on the counter top and peeled my sweaty, pajamas off of me. Then I took a cold shower. I felt refreshed when I got out. I dried off and put the clothes that Allie gave me, on. Then I brushed out my hair and dried it. I brushed out my hair again and went back to my room and slipped my shoes on and went down to the kitchen.
The smell of eggs, bacon, and pancakes hit my nose before I even set foot into the kitchen. It made my stomach rumble with hunger. I walked into the kitchen and was greeted with a chorus of 'Good morning.' I muttered a good morning back, seeing as I wasn't much of a morning person. Dr. Reeves was sitting at the table. I was kind of surprised actually, but then again this was his home. I took a seat in between Sarah and Simon. "Help yourself." Dr. Reeves said, not looking away from his newspaper. I got a couple of pancakes and put them on my plate.
"You have any peanut butter?" I asked, curiously.
"Peanut butter?" The cook asked me questioningly. I felt some confused stares.
"Yeah. I like my pancakes with peanut butter." I said, shrugging. She shrugged and nodded.
"Of course dear." She went to one of the cupboards and got out a jar and gave it to me.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome." Everyone, but Dr. Reeves, was looking at me weirdly.
"What?" They shook their heads and began eating. I shrugged and put some peanut butter on my pancakes and drowned them with syrup. Then I cut a small piece of them and ate it.
"Would you like anything to drink?" I swallowed my food.
"Milk, please." She nods and makes me a glass of milk and then sits it down on the table.
"Thanks." She nods and walks away. Why do I feel like I did something wrong? I just asked for some peanut butter and I said it politely. I even said thank you like two times! I guess I'll never know. After breakfast, Allie and Sarah dragged me out of the house and we walked to a nearby mall. They chatted with each other the whole time. For some reason, I feel like a third wheel and I don't mean it like that. I feel kind of out of place, like I don't belong. I sighed inwardly. I blinked back a few tears and kept walking, hoping they didn't notice how miserable I felt. We went inside a clothing store and we looked around.
"Hey Cassie?" Allie's voice brought me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah?"
"Are you even looking?"
"Sorry. I was just wondering why you guys looked at me like that this morning at breakfast." I half lied.
"Oh that. Well, Dr. Reeves had a wife and a daughter once. They died in a car accident. He told us once that his daughter loved having peanut butter on her pancakes." I nodded. We didn't stay on the subject for long. I actually looked at some of the clothes that the store had and instantly fell in love with them all. I picked out the ones I like the most and since we didn't have a lot of money to spend, we only had enough to get me four outfits.
