Chapter 9
The next day at school, people whispered and stared at the cast on my wrist. Why is it, that every time something bad happens to me or Simon or my friends, I am the only one who gets hurt severely? Oh well. I guess it can't be helped. It also didn't help that I had a lot of homework to do. Simon helped me on some of it, even though he had his own homework to do. I felt bad, so I tried to help him on his. I wasn't much of help, but I didn't feel as bad about him helping me on my homework, and he still had his own to do. At lunch, I was having a hard time trying to eat, since my wrist is broken and all. Jeremy and Brendon were teasing me about it. So I stuck my tongue out at them.
Even though I was having trouble with it, I wouldn't let anyone help me eat. At the end of the day, we all walked home together. We saw the blonde and his friends, but they completely ignored us and walked on past us. I shrugged as we continued walking to St. Matthew's. When we walked through the front door, I noticed Simon wasn't with us. "Guys, Simon's missing." I said, shocked and though I wouldn't admit it out loud, scared. How could we not hear anything?
"Well, let's go look for him." Allie said, sitting her stuff down. We all nodded and set our stuff aside.
"Let's leave a note." Sarah said getting a piece of paper and pencil. She wrote something down, put it on a small, table in the hallway, and then we left. We went in the direction we came from. We walked until we were sure he wasn't there. Then we decided to split up and went in different directions. I walked down the road we just searched again and decided that if anyone picked him up, then there had to be some kind of evidence or sign that something was there. I looked down at the road and saw skid marks. They led to the park. I shrugged. It's something, which is better than nothing. When I got to the park, I saw tire tracks in the grass. I followed them into the woods.
I shuddered as the memories of what happened not even three days ago ran through my mind. I noticed as I walked into the woods, there weren't many people around; that made my spine tingle. For some reason, the trees look scarier during the day. I stopped in my tracks when I heard a gunshot and someone yelling. "Simon." I whispered shocked. Then I took off to where I heard the gunshot. As I got close, I saw a woman figure standing a few yards away from a body on the ground. I noticed with a shock of horror, that it was Mom. She was laughing that shrill laugh of hers, which sent chills down my spine.
"You're a pathetic little boy, you know that? You and your sister have caused me a great deal of trouble and have been nothing but thorns in my side. As soon as you breathe your last breath, I'm going to get your sister next." She said, laughing some more. Then I felt like my body went into overdrive and I wasn't in control of it anymore. My heart was beating like crazy and I felt the blood rush to my ears. I bent down and grabbed the heaviest thing I could find; a rock. Then I took a running start and tackled my maniac-like mother and hit her over the head with the rock. Her body went limp. I checked her pulse and she was alive. Then I got up and kicked the gun she had out of her hand and far away from her; just in case she wakes up. I ran over to Simon and bent down over him.
"Simon." I said, hugging him. I noticed he got shot in the stomach.
"C-Cassie?" He asked, having a hard time breathing.
"Don't talk." I said, sitting up straight. I took my hoodie off and pressed it against his wound. He winced. "Sorry." I said, as tears began to roll down my cheeks. I called for an ambulance and was told to not hang up so that they could find me. Simon weakly lifted up his arm and wiped my tears away. I held his hand to my cheek. Then I held his hand in mine and squeezed it. I was literally praying to God that he wouldn't die. As ten minutes passed, his breathing was slowing down, and when I checked his pulse, so was his heart. I started to panic and cry more. I came very close to sobbing.
