Chapter 1
Hello, my name is Cassandra Ellison, but you can call me Cassie. Today, several families have come to interview the kids at the St. Ann's orphanage. So I decided to go on a walk, knowing that they were all going to avoid me. No one seemed to notice me going out the front door. I sighed. Of course they wouldn't. Once outside, I took a deep breath and let it out. Then I started walking. I walked to the park and went in. I hate it when the families come. They always seem to avoid me. Do I have a sign on my forehead saying I was a bad kid or something? They'll be there for a good three hours, so I better find something to do. I went over to the swing set and sat down on one of the swings. I started swinging a little. I sat there for an hour and a half, just thinking. I was getting bored, so I stood up and went walking around some more. An hour and a half later, I went back to St. Ann's. It was oddly quiet and most of the cars that were there earlier were still there. It can't take them that long to choose a kid. I was curious. There was this nervousness in the pit of my stomach and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up as I got closer and closer to the building. There are usually a few kids out running around outside. I slowed down as I walked up to the door. I put my hand on the knob and turned it slowly. I pushed the door open and let it go. I was horrified at what I saw. Blood was everywhere. On the walls, the ceiling, the floor, the chairs, the front desk. And then there was the bodies; so many of them. Some of them had their eyes open. Those glassy orbs were burned into my memory, as I sunk down onto my knees and started crying and sobbing. I don't know these people, so why am I crying? I couldn't find the answer. I didn't have a phone on me, so I clumsily stood up and ran over to the house just a block away. I banged on the door and a lady answered. "Please call the police. The orphanage." That was all I could say before I started crying again. She nodded and picked up her phone and called the police. I kept whispering please over and over again. The lady helped me into her home and sat me down on the couch. She started comforting me. When the police showed up, I was completely calm. They wanted to speak with me.
"Where were you when this happened?" A man asked calmly. He had dark brown hair that fell over his eyes, which had kindness in them. He was hesitant while asking this. Probably thinking I'm going to flip out or something.
"I was out walking around the park."
"For how long?"
"Three hours, because that's usually how long it takes for families who come to St. Ann's to choose a kid." He nods writing stuff down on a notepad.
"So you didn't see who did it or have any idea who might have done it?"
"No." He nods.
"Thank you for your help."
"No problem." I said a little shooken up. Those people weren't murdered, they were slaughtered. I closed my eyes, those glassy orbs showing up. I opened my eyes, scared. The lady brought me some tea. "Thank you."
"You're welcome, sweet heart." She said sympathetically. I took a few sips. Another police officer came in, but this one was a women.
"Do you have anywhere to stay?" I looked at her in disbelief. "Oops, stupid question." She said, chuckling to herself. "Sorry. Would you please come with me?" I nodded silently. I stood up and gave the lady her tea cup back and thanked her again. Then I followed the police officer. She had her long blonde hair pulled back into a low ponytail. I saw earlier that she had blue eyes. She looked to be in her early thirties. "Stay right here." She said as we stopped a good two feet away from a police car. She went to the officer from earlier and they started talking. I heard some of their conversation. "So what are we going to do with the girl? She has nowhere to go."
"We can transfer her to a different orphanage, can't we?" I rolled my eyes. Of course they'd say that. I glared a little at the ground. I don't want to go to another orphanage.
