Chapter 5
The school week went by pretty quickly. No one whispered or stared at us or anything else. It turns our Skye and Taylor didn't say anything to anyone and that made me feel bad about slapping that girl. So I went and found her, and apologized to her. She said that it was okay and that she kind of did deserve it, because she wouldn't want anyone making jokes and stuff about her friends and family. Then we started talking and she turned out to be a really cool person. She told me her name was Casey. She had green eyes like mine, but she had short, brown hair. It was highlighted with a light caramel color. She had a few freckles scattered across her face.
She had a really nice smile. I didn't feel as bad about slapping her when I noticed that there wasn't a bruise on her cheek. "So that's how you make friends? You slap them and instantly become good friends?" Jeremy asked grinning. I rolled my eyes and punched him in the arm. Brendon laughed.
"You better watch out, she might slap you, dude!" He chortled. Jeremy started laughing too. I sighed.
"I'm going to slap you both, if you," I didn't get to finish my threat, because Dr. Reeves came in. The boys settled down and Allie, Sarah, and Simon walked in.
"We have a new permanent guest." A guy about our age stepped out beside Dr. Reeves. His hair wasn't long, but it wasn't short either. It was black, and had blue streaks in it. His eyes were chocolate brown. He was pale and had piercings on his left side of his nose, above his right eyebrow, and on his lower lip. He wore a band tee and black skinny jeans. On his wrists, he wore thick, black bracelets with spikes on them. His shoes were scuffed up and had dry mud on them. Taking a closer look at his shirt, there were some holes in it. "His name is Jacob. The orphanage he came from wasn't the nicest, and it was shut down. So make him feel at home, okay?"
"Yes, Dr. Reeves." We answered.
"Good." Then he left like he did on my first day. Jacob, now that I looked, had a few bruises and scars along his arms and cheek.
"Hi, I'm Sarah!" Sarah said in her usual happy voice. Jacob didn't respond or make any movement that indicated he acknowledged her. I noticed he was staring at me.
"I'm Cassie." I said, staring back at him. He blinked and nodded.
"I'm Allie. And this is Jeremy, Brendon, and Cassie's brother, Simon." Allie said, smiling. Jeremy and Brendon said their 'hello's and Simon just nodded. He just stared. "Um." Allie, for once, didn't know what to say or do.
"They say, every time there's an awkward moment a gay baby is born." I said, grinning. That did it. Everyone cracked up laughing, even Simon laughed. Jacob started talking after that. He told us how horrible the orphanage he came from was. It turns out, they only treated him horribly. I know what that's like. He thought it was going to be like that here, but we told him that it was the exact opposite of it. He didn't believe us at first. "Do you see any other kids here besides us?"
"You mean to tell me that there aren't any other kids around here, but you guys?" He asked in disbelief.
"That's exactly what we're telling you!" Brendon said, grinning.
"Where are the others, if there were any others, anyway?" I asked, curiously. "I mean, how long has it been just you guys?"
"It's been just us for, what, five years?" Sarah asked.
"Pretty much." Brendon and Jeremy said at the same time.
"Doesn't that bother you?"
"Not really." Allie said, shrugging. The others nodded in agreement. "Why? Does it bother you?"
