Chapter 1

Corlene's POV

I stared up at my new high school, wondering what horrors or excitement would be waiting for me through the green double doors. I considered just hopping back on my motorbike and riding around town. The first day of school was always the same anyway. The teachers would introduce themselves and give a briefing of what they would be doing for the year. Blah blah blah. But I couldn't not show and I knew it. It would just disappoint Clint and grandma and grandpa.

I sighed and looked down at my boots. For a moment I fiddled with the strap of my messenger bag filled with books, paper, and pens. Finally, taking a deep breath, I walked through the double doors. The hall was full of students. I had gone to the office the day before so I didn't need to announce my arrival and all that crap. Weaving through pretty much the entire student body, I finally found my locker. After struggling with it for awhile, I managed to open it and shove in the books I wouldn't need for the next couple hours. Slamming the locker door shut, I whirled to go to class but instead bumped into somebody. The books the chick was carrying spilled onto the floor.

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" I apologized, bending down to help her pick up the books.

"Nah, it's my fault. I wasn't looking." The girl said. After clearing the floor, we both stood up and I handed her back the books. She smiled and gave me a once over. I did the same to her. She was a pretty cute brunette, wearing black converses, jean shorts, and a cute neon green tank top with a smiley face on it.

"Thanks." She said, still smiling.

I smiled back. "No prob."

"You're new here, aren't you?"

"Is it that obvious?"

She laughed. "Well, I've been coming to Baker Hill since freshman year. So I've pretty much memorized every single person here. I'm Annarina, by the way. Annarina Brett." She held out her hand. I took it.

"Chill name, dude! Mine's Corlene Morano."

"Pleasure!" We started making our way down the hall. "What's your first class?" She asked. I checked my schedule, "Math." My favorite subject, thank God.

"Cool! Same here."

"Mind showing me the way?"

"Not at all. I shall be your personal tour guide for today." She bowed with a flourish which made me laugh. We made our way through the school, turning a few corners before stopping in front of the classroom door, chatting the entire time. We entered the classroom just as the first bell rang and grabbed two empty seats in the middle. The teacher hadn't arrived yet so kids were still chatting and checking their phones. One dude was actually sleeping. I snickered when I noticed the drool on his desk.

The teacher came in just as the late bell rang. I leaned back in my chair. So this is Miss Casey Miller. She was a tall, attractive woman with fiery red hair in her late 20's early 30's. She looked calm and kind but her posture told me she was someone that you would not want to cross. Her high heels clicked as she made her way to her desk. When she turned her back on us to write her name on the chalkboard, the dude sitting on my right actually groaned. I rolled my eyes. Pervert much?

"As you all know, my name is Casey Miller. I'll be your math teacher for the year." Her voice was soft but strong. "First and foremost, I have a zero tolerance policy. Those who cause trouble in this class will receive detention before you could even say 'Oops.'" The class was silent as they soaked in the warning. I couldn't help but smile.

I already liked her.

"Now, before we get started I wouldlike for you all to silence your cellphones and place them on your desk along with any iPods or MP3 players. I don't tolerate texting or music during my class. If there is a family emergency your parents can contact you through the office. If I catch you even glancing at your electronic devices, I will confiscate it, and it won't be returned to you until your parents contact me. Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes ma'am." The class grumbled. For the next minute, all you could hear were the sounds of students silencing their cell phones and gingerly placing them on their desks with a longing look on their face. Taking out my own Blackberry, I silenced it and placed it on the left hand corner of my desk along with my iPod.

Miss Miller was about to continue when the classroom door swung open. Everyone's eyes swiveled in that direction as two dudes filed in, laughing. The one on the left was tall with a strong, lean body. You could see the shape of his six pack through the tight V-neck shirt he was wearing. He had addictive light green eyes and dirty blonde hair. The one on the right was a black hair brown eyed Indian. He too was also tall with a strong build. In other words, they were both smoking hot and from the look of it, they knew it. Every single girl in the room sighed. I just rolled my eyes. How pathetic.

"Mr. Blake. Mr. Chulan." Miss Miller said smoothly. "Seems like you both have the honor of being the first to get detention this year." She pulled out two detention slips and was about to fill them in when the dude on the left spoke.

"Well, if you write them separately, then only one of us will be the first, and the other the second. It would be a great insult for the second one if he isn't also in the first honor category." He smirked while the other boy snickered. Miss Miller just smiled.

"Hmm, you're quite right." The boy looked amused, obviously not expecting her to agree with him. Miss Miller looked around the room before her eyes settled on mine. I met her gaze steadily. "Miss Morano, would you come up here for a moment please?" All eyes were on me as I made my way up to the front, my boot scraping on the floor with each step. When I made it to the desk, she said, "Since Mr. Blake has made a good point on this matter, I've decided to take up his request and place them both in, ahem, first honor category. So if you would be so kind as to fill out this detention slip for him at the same time I write out Mr. Chulan's then we could stop wasting time and officially start class." She held out a pen and one of the detention slips.

Glancing at the boys, I saw them both wore a pissed off expression on their faces. Obviously, they hadn't expected this. Smirking, I happily took the pen and slip. "It would be my pleasure, Miss Miller." We both bent our heads down and I filled in the detention slip. I could feel their eyes on me, burning holes into the back of my head. I finished writing it just as Miss Miller was finished with her's. "Thank you, sweetie."

Looking the boys in the eye, I capped my pen with attitude. "No problem." I shot them a sickly sweet smile before swaying back to my desk. Annarina was gazing at me in awe. I winked at her before taking my chair. I looked back at the front in time to see Miss Miller handing them the detention slips.

"Have fun with those." She said, shooting them a white smile. The boy tried one more time.

"I could show you fun." He purred, leaning forward. "Whaddaya say you and me this Friday? It'll be the best night of your life." He winked. She didn't even blink an eye.

"Sorry, honey," she pushed him back with her pen, "I don't date kids."

Oh, burn! She pointed to an empty desk in the back of the room. Fuming, he joined his friend at the back of the class and slumped down. They both started whispering, no doubt about what just happened. My theory was confirmed when I felt their eyes on me. I couldn't help but smile.

This was going to be an interesting year.
