Chapter 16
Lysander's POV
Jordan. The name rang in my ear when Tara practically shouted it to...what’s his name again?...Colin? This Jordan had obviously had an impact on Corlene’s life or she wouldn’t have stiffened at the sound of his name.
Everybody was silent when I asked the question. Colin looked as if the ground would open up and swallow him whole. But I had my eyes fixed on Corlene who looked calm, as always. Her hands, however, gave her away. They gripped the chair’s arm so tightly her knuckles started to turn white.
“He’s an ex-boyfriend of mine.” She answered. Andrew, Colin, and Tara jerked as if they had been electrocuted. They looked shocked that she had responded to my question.
“What did he do?” I asked with the same tone but softer. She hesitated, not knowing if she should answer or not. I saw Tara shake her head from my peripheral vision.
“Well,” Corlene started, “let’s just say he wouldn’t win the Best Boyfriend Award of the Year.” Her tone told me that was all I would get out of her.
She immediately changed the subject. She asked her friends about school and what had been going on in their lives, as if the conversation about Jordan had never come up.
I realized then that she didn’t completely trust us. That she obviously had some secrets underneath all the headstrong attitude and….maybe she isn’t as strong as she lets us think she is. Even the strongest people fall. Even the strongest people cry. Even the strongest people have breaking points. I wonder what her’s is.
I wanted in. I wanted to know all about her. I wanted to know her secrets. I wanted her to trust me completely. I wanted her to know that I would never hurt her in any way.
But then again, was I also ready to let her in?

Corlene’s buddies stuck around for a bit after we finished eating. Tara continued to flirt with Annarina, causing her to blush constantly. Arie was practically shaking with anger and jealousy when she did. He’d already confessed to me that he had a thing for her. Obviously, I teased him nonstop but I was happy for him though worried at the same time for Annarina. Arie was like me, a player who constantly enjoyed the attention of girls and wasn’t such a committed person when it came to relationships, which was why we didn’t do them. Also being such a wild person, I wasn’t sure if Annarina could handle him though I have noticed she’s becoming a much stronger girl, courtesy of Corlene, naturally.
The entire gang walked around the mall. Soon, Andrew, Colin, and Tara were saying their goodbyes. “Party tonight.” Andrew said, grinning, as he wrapped his arms around Corlene. I couldn’t help but growl silently. The dickhead had the nerve to throw a smirk my way and wink. Arie laughed when he saw what happened.
When Corlene’s friends left, the rest of us continued to browse the mall. We were walking in the direction of Barnes & Nobel’s when Corlene started to get excited. “Omigosh, it’s Barnes & Nobel’s! We have to go in there. I have a few news book that I have to get, a couple of some mangas…” She started walking over there but Annarina intervened by grabbing her arm and tugging her in the opposite direction.
