My whole life I've thought of myself as unlucky. My parents didn't appreciate me and I always saw happy family's everywhere I went. Then I went on my first mission trip and all of that changed. I saw truly unlucky people. They didn't have clean water or enough food. They didn't have a bed to sleep in. They didn't even know about God. After that I realized how lucky I really was. I have so much more than them. I no longer pity myself. I also know no matter what happens it's not as bad as what they have gone through.
Savannah and Jay were fast asleep when it happened. The leaves on a nearby bush moved. It was a small movement, something you would only catch if you were looking for it. A movement small enough that if you blinked you would have missed it. Luckily I saw it though. I knew someone or something was behind that bush. I bent down and grabbed the gun. I wasn't sure if I would actually use it or not but I looked scarier if I was holding it. I listened and watched. I waited for quite some time. I started to think I was just being paranoid when the bush moved again. I was tired of waiting but too scared to approach the bush. I thought about waking Savannah but then decided against it. She would be mad if I woke her and it ended up just being a squirrel. I just stood there waiting again. I was tired of waiting after a while and decided to sit down. That's what it was waiting for. Right when I sat down an animal came out from the bush. It was moving so fast I couldn't tell what it was. I quickly shot at it. I felt bad for the animal but it was running at me. The shot woke Savannah and Jay. They saw the animal laying on the ground and then looked up at me. It was a coyote. I wasn't sure what to do with the body. Jay suggested skinning it and eating the meat since we were out of food. The problem was we didn't have a blade to skin it with and a fire would give our spot away to the Isis people. It was almost sunrise so we decided to just keep walking and keep an eye out for something sharp. The woods just kept going on forever. I started to think there was no end to the woods. Then Savannah saw the trees to the left were starting to thin out. We started walking towards the left until we got to another make shift road. We decided to walk up the road hoping to find some people who were on our side. Savannah was carrying the coyote body and I was carrying the backpack. Jays arm was bandaged but the couldn't move it. There wasn't much self defense we learned that you could do with just one arm. Someone would have to keep an eye on Jay at all times. Jay hated being hurt, he hated feeling weak and useless. Savannah and I wouldn't let him do much thought because we didn't want to make his arm any worse. Jay tried to hide that he was in pain but I could tell. Jays one of those people where you can always tell there emotions by their facial expressions. I could tell we were getting close to a camp. I just had a gut feeling. Then I started hearing voices. It sounded like a woman. Shortly after that I could smell some sort of food. My mouth started to water. Jay and Savannah could smell it too. The three of us found the energy to run towards the smell. When we got to the camp we saw the woman. We also saw a few men and three children. Then some other women came out of a tent. The looked scared when they noticed I was holding a gun. I put the gun back into the backpack. We just stood there for awhile not saying a word. Then the woman introduced us to everyone. It looked like we had finally found some other people on our side. We also found a blade in their camp. We skinned the coyote and cooked it. It tasted pretty good to my surprise. Then after the meal they gave Jay, Savannah, and I a tent to share. We fell asleep quickly. But we didn't stay asleep long before a noise outside the tent woke us up.
