"You must be Kara." The woman said with a sexy smile. Her light brown hair fell in waves half way down her back, but it was pulled from her face in a clip that met at the back of her head. I hesitated before I replied. This woman reeked of sex. She wore a woman's suit with a slightly too short skirt and a white button down shirt that poorly concealed her large breasts. I tried not to stare at the material stretched across them.
"I am." I replied lamely, curious as to how she would know me. She laughed softly at my confused expression and extended her hand. I cautiously took it. Her hands were extemely soft and she had perfectly manicured nails.
"I'm Hope English. The new partner that Brown brought in. I guess technically I am your new boss." She said with a grin that spoke wonders about how well she thought of herself. I smiled anxiously and released her perfect hand as if it were on fire. She smiled knowingly.
"Well, it's nice to meet you." I said nervously as a female coworker made an appearance by my side.
"Hello there Kara!" The woman exclaimed, and I could smell the strong scent of alcohol on her breath. "I see you have met our new boss!" She exclaimed on a hiccup and a giggle. "What do you say you take me home and put me to bed?" The woman said with a wiggle of her eyebrows. I couldn't keep myself from laughing at the ridiculous proposition. I looked to my new boss for support in the matter but she had suddenly gone stern faced. I frowned slightly. She must not appreciate drunkeness as much as I did.
"How about I call you a cab hun?" I asked her as she threw her arm around my shoulder to steady herself. She laughed a little too loudly and I cringed at the closeness of it. She hiccuped again and then solemnly nodded her head. I looked at my boss apologetically. "Sorry. Duty calls." I smiled and walked the drunken woman outside as I whistled for a cab. Suddenly the woman grabbed my face and planted a firm, slightly sloppy kiss on my lips and sat into the waiting car. I smiled unenthusiastically as I told the driver where to take her. As the cab pulled away I wiped my lips clean of the unwanted kiss and turned around. Suddenly I saw hope. Leaning against the building with a lit cigarette in her hand. She had probably seen the whole display.
"You know, our company doesn't encourage coworkers dating." She said as she took a drag of her cig and blew out the white smoke. I smiled weakly.
"Trust me when I say, neither do I." I laughed softly as she seemed to consider my words. I took a deep breath of what smoke remained in the air and ached for my own, despite quitting so long ago. "Can I ask you something?" She looked at me nonchalantly and nodded gingerly. "Were you at my birthday party a few days ago?" I asked curious. I couldn't help but notice the resemblance between the girl at my party that I had seen only for a moment.
"I was. Your friend Jane invited me. I didn't even know that people knew who I was. She probably wanted us to meet in a more formal setting or something. But I got a call and had to leave before I could even introduce myself. Sorry about that." She shrugged and threw her cigarette on the slightly damp ground. It had obviously rained whilst they were at the party.
"No. I mean it's totally fine. I just wanted to be reassured I wasn't crazy." I laughed awkwardly. Hope smiled slightly.
"I never said you weren't crazy, I just said that I was there." I laughed softly at her joke. There was a moment of silence before she said, "Are you and that Jane girl together?" She leaned against the building and crossed her thin perfectly shaped legs before her. Her high heels made her nearly 3 inches taller so I assumed without them she would be around my height.
"Me and Jane have been best friends for a very long time. But no, we aren't together." I bit my lip and then continued, "How did you guess I was gay?" I raised a brow. She chuckled softly.
"It could have been the way you hold yourself. Or it could have been the lesbian themed birthday party." She grinned. She seemed so cool and confident with herself. Everything about her seemed to intrigue me. I had to remember that she was my boss, and one messed up relationship was more than enough for a lifetime. I sighed. "I guess I should get back to the party. I have to play host or some other such nonsense." She wiped the back of her skirt with her hands and smiled. "I'll see you Monday." She said and re-entered the building without another word my way. I rubbed the back of my head, slightly confused. Then decided to go home. I whistled as another cab approached and gently sat down. Once the cab began to move I called Jane.
"Can we meet up tonight? I'm on my way home." I said into the phone.
"Sure. Sounds fun to me." Jane said and hung up. I stared at the phone a moment before placing it back into my purse. Jane was just what the doctor ordered.
