"What did you do to your car?" My sister Elly, short for Elaine, asked. I had just walked down the stairs, she couldn't even say good morning, or maybe greet me some other way.
"Well, hello to you too sis, I slept fine." I smiled big, "Thank you so much for asking."
"I didn't, I asked about your car."
I stared at her for a moment, trying to decide which way I wanted to take our conversation. She was looking rather bitchy. Her hair was pulled back, her light brown bangs swooped across her forehead. She was wearing an awful orange shirt and tiny white shorts. Her facial expression reminded me of someone who was constipated. She was apparently in a bad mood.
"I hit someone," I answered honestly. I could have lied and said I hit an animal, but if the guy came back to get my insurance, I didn't want to be caught in a lie. That's just embarrassing. Then there was the fact that she looked extra mean today, and I wasn't ready to argue.
"Sadie I'm serious. You have to drive me around in that." She said, flipping her brown pony tail off her shoulder. She had just turned sixteen a few days before I got back, and she had yet to get her license.
I rolled my eyes at her attitude and opened up the fridge in search of breakfast. "I am serious," I responded while grabbing a yogurt. I closed the fridge and sat down across from her. "I seriously hit some guy and he didn't want me to call the police or take him to the hospital," I shrugged. I didn't want to make it a big deal out of it until I knew if it actually was one.
"Whatever, you're so full of shit," She hissed.
I didn't push it any further, I had done my deed as a good big sister and told her the truth, if she didn't want to accept it, that wasn't my problem.
"Elaine!" My mom yelled running into the kitchen, "let's go." She dangled the keys in front of my sister, which Elly quickly snatched up. Mom then kissed the top of my head, told me how much she loved me (which was so much, by the way), and then ran out the door.
I smiled at the door for a few seconds after they left. I probably should have asked my mom for some Elly pointers, because I didn't understand how she put up with her and how I was going to. Elly looked sweet until you got to know her, then she was like an evil step-sister from Cinderella. She was thin, with light hazel eyes, and she was short for her age. Everything about her screamed nice girl, except her mouth, that usually screamed profanities.
Elly and I were nothing alike. She was prissy, while I was nice. She thought the world revolved around her, while I realized that it didn't. We had similar facial features but that's where it ended. She had light eyes, while mine were dark brown, some would say chocolate colored. I wasn't rail thin either, I had extra meat on me, but I wouldn't call me fat, I had curves like I was supposed to. Even our hair was different; hers was a soft brown with natural highlights, mine was dark brown and I made the underneath blonde. I tell you all this because I swear she is an alien, and I just wanted to plead my case.
I shook thoughts of Elly out of my head and then returned to my room to get dressed. I had plans on going to house number 1402 and checking on my victim. I needed to know he was still alive and hopefully talk him into getting a check-up.
I quickly dressed myself in a pair of plain jeans and a white fitted t-shirt. I pulled my dark hair up into a pony tail and then raced out of my room. The more I thought about seeing helmet guy, the more anxious I got, making me want to move faster. I slipped my sandals on once I reached the front door and then rushed out.
I slowed my insane power walking, which I was sure made me look like a duck with something in its butt, when I reached the driveway of 1402. I couldn't help the fear the seeped into my mind, I had lived my whole life fearing that house. All things crazy came out of it, and helmet boy didn't do anything to change my mind about that. I ended up having to take a few deep breaths to calm myself down, I mean it wasn't like monsters lived there.
