Was he human or a monster?

All Kye's classmates had called him a freak and he'd never fit in. Being human hurt in so many ways. Emotions were confusing. Could all this have an explanation? Was Kyran something other than human? If so, what?

The thought was both frightening and exciting. Kyran ran as fast as he could through the darkness, reckless of all in his path.

Escape from the strange woman became his focus. She hadn't seen him slip away while she fought Rian, but she'd figure it out sooner or later. Maybe she could track him, somehow.

The boy paused, catching his breath. He wasn't athletic, not like Rian. He preferred the indoors; reading and studying. Extraneous physical activity was a waste of time.

His mind felt frozen. What should he do?

For a moment, he considered leaving Millersfield completely. He could just run. Get away. Hitch-hike. Stow away in a truck. He'd heard people talk about "riding the rails" by hiding in train cars full of coal or wood. Could he do that? How would he survive and where would he go?

The outside world hadn't interested him much. It was unimportant and far away, until now. He had no money, nor did he know how to get any. Someone would find him and force him to come back home.

He wasn't sure what terrified him more: the woman who vowed to kill him, Aunt Aldena who considered him to be artificial, or the dark necromancer who created him.

Kyran couldn't go back to the house and face Aldena with her cold, calculating eyes. Now he wasn't even sure he trusted his own brother, Rian, who looked at him as if he were an alien.

And what about their mother? He wondered what she would think of Kye, if she knew that he were artificial. Or ... did she know already? That gave him a chill.

Yet, the thought of leaving her with the necromancer disturbed him. Aunt Aldena wasn't going to do anything but wait. Rian, of course, would rush up to confront Molan—and he would fail. Rian was surely no match for a magic user from another dimension.

And what would that necromancer do to Lauretta?

Did Kyran love his mother? Could he save her?

How?

The questions swirled around in his mind, making it hard to come up with a solution. From here, Kyran could see the lights of the campground. From there, he could find his way to the crypt again. He started going in that direction.

He had to do something. He wasn't sure what.

Quietly, he came up behind the pavilion. He heard voices inside. Some of the warriors were still there, but Kyran didn't want to be seen. He walked around the outside until he found a pile of ratan practice swords. He picked one up, testing it to see if it was too heavy, but it seemed about right. Unlike his brother, Kyran was no good at sword fighting, but having some kind of weapon seemed like a good idea.

He slipped back into the fog, making his way towards the graveyard.

Something else drove Kyran forward. He felt drawn to this wizard. There was something about him—something that Kyran needed to understand. Too many questions. And sooner or later the two of them had to meet. So it might as well be now.

Kyran made it to the main road. But, he feared the silver-haired lady--Ehina. No doubt she would track Kyran down to kill him now. So, he jumped over the fence and cut across the field towards the lake. Maybe he could lose them ... the fog was so thick. He must be quick, because as soon as they realized he was gone, they'd come after him.

Could Kyran really be a source of evil power for a wizard from another world? How would that work? He couldn't really picture it. Perhaps they were all wrong. Perhaps that wasn't the case at all. After all, what did they know about other worlds and mysterious wizards buried in crypts? Nothing.

And the woman could be lying for all they knew. He didn't trust her.

Kyran reached the lake. Following the shore would be easy. He knew the area well. All he had to do is make it to the graveyard. Once he was there, he doubted that Rian and the others would be able to stop him, because Molan would be watching for him. The wizard would find a way to slow Rian and the others down to allow Kyran to reach him.

Was Kyran really doing this to save his mother ... or was he simply curious about this wizard's intense interest in himself?

Didn't matter. Kyran would go anyway.
