The two girls pressed themselves closer to the rock that they hid behind. In front of them, they had a great view of the meadow in front of the crypt. This was full of skeletons and zombies. Undead creatures roamed all over the graveyard. It was as if they'd animated everyone who'd ever died in this town.

Maybe 45 minutes ago the girls had sequestered themselves in a safe spot and had already filmed a lot of video of the happenings in the graveyard, including the police and troopers battling with skeletons and what looked like Westin on the trail to the crypt. Now, things had been quiet for a half an hour.

Haley knew that her parents would be furious, but she had to finish videotaping this. It would make the most awesome documentary. She would be famous! Maybe, she would even get on a show on Oprah's OWN network. She clung to that thought as the wind turned cold and they both tired from hiding in the craggy spot they'd found on the hill.

The others had gone back to the house, but Haley felt sure they would return. She knew Rian.

In the distance, they had seen that wizard, Molan. And also Kyran. Poor Kyran walking silent and stone-faced through the cemetery. She'd never liked him very well. No one really liked that little boy. But she'd often felt sorry for him. He did try to get along with others, though sometimes he was obnoxious, but no more so than other boys his age. Maybe less so.

In any case, being taken over by an evil wizard was terrible. She didn't know what she could do to help him. Rian didn't know either.

And where had the wizard hidden Lauretta--Rian's mom? Haley hoped to see her, if she sat here and watched the crypt. But so far, they'd seen no sign of her.

Haley turned to Anya. "Maybe we shouldn't have snuck out. We should have told them we were coming here."

Anya shook her head solemnly. "They would have said no."

Haley pouted, it was true. "I'm not a child," she said. "I'm 17 and a half."

"And I'm 13," said Anya.

Haley ignored that statement. It didn't really uphold her argument.

"I should have taken my Dad's cell phone," said Haley. "Then we could call if we got into trouble."

"Cell phones aren't working," said Anya. She rummaged a moment in her bag. "So, I stole this," she said, producing one of the walkie-talkies.

"What?" Haley took the walkie-talkie. "Are you kidding me?"

"Well, the boys don't need all the walkie-talkies, after all."

"Why didn't you say you had a walkie-talkie?" demanded Haley. Sometimes Anya was an enigma.

"Nothing much has happened yet. And they would have just told us to come home."

Haley couldn't argue with that. "Okay," she said. "I'm going to call them." She flipped the power on. "Hello, is anyone there? This is Haley, over."

A crackled or two filled the silence, then an answer. "Haley, where are you?" demanded her dad, Harlan.

"Well, don't be mad," said Haley.

"Where are you?" the voice sounded more angry, if possible.

"Um, we ... you see. I didn't want to be left behind and so .... "

"Where, Haley?"

"In the graveyard. We have a great lookout spot here."

"You listen to me, young lady. You get out of there right now and get back home." The sound cut off for a moment. "All right, you stay there and we will come and get you immediately--" the radio cut off. For a moment there was only static.

"Haley," now it was Rian on the radio. "Where are you?"

"I told him--in the graveyard."

"No, I mean, where in the graveyard. Can you see anything?"

"Sure," she said. "I can see lots of things."

"No, I mean, like skeletons or zombies?"

"Yeah, at the crypt and, well ... everywhere."

Silence.

"Okay, stay there. I have an idea," said Rian. "Zane and Edward, get everyone to meet at the police station. Over."

"Copy that," said Edward.
