As they neared the police station, Harlan, Haley and Anya came out to meet them. Harlan smiled at them. "Glad to see you're in one piece."
Haley looked as though she'd run up to Rian but then she saw Ehina and stared at her. Haley came up alongside Rian.
"So, who's your girlfriend?" Haley asked in a quiet voice.
"Girlfriend, what girlfriend?" Rian demanded.
She nodded over at the silver-haired girl, Ehina, dressed in the other-worldy, blue and white armor.
"She's not my girlfriend," said Rian, lowering his own voice a little.
"Whatever," frowned Haley.
Rian felt annoyed. "You took Anya to the graveyard? She's like, nine."
"I'm thirteen," Anya piped up; she had been listening to their conversation.
"No. She followed me," said Haley. "I couldn't stop her."
"Right," said Rian.
"You're avoiding the topic," said Haley, folding her arms.
"You're imagining things," said Rian, putting his hands on her shoulders. "You're the one I like." He smiled at her and she relaxed and smiled back.
But Rian had other things on his mind right now. He followed the others into the Millersfield Police Station. He stiffened a little when Daren saw him and immediately started in his direction, but he kept his cool.
"Daren," said Rian.
"Rian," replied Daren, looking at him with some disapproval. "You're still alive?"
"So far," said Rian. He wasn't sure if his uncle was disappointed, but he had made no move to arrest Rian. Good.
The Gondorian Warrior Circle was there. Zane's leg had been sliced by a sword and bandaged up. Jenna, Haley's mom, had been blinded by a spell, but it was already wearing off.
Grandma Baggins was there, of course, handing out sandwiches.
A number of police had gathered there, including the tall, silent, police chief, Francis Campbell; his lieutenant, Lloyd Howe, and two state troopers: Earl Santo and Alexandra Brumwell.
Everyone fell silent as Rian recounted their story of the attack on the Old Mill and rescuing the townspeople, most of whom had been taken to the hospital for examination.
"This is Ehina," said Rian, pointing to the silver-haired off-worlder. "I believe she came from the same universe as Molan, the wizard."
At this point, Francis Campbell, who had been silent up to that moment, stepped forward. "Okay, I've heard enough," he said, in no-nonsense, ex-military fashion. He would have been smoking a cigarette, if it'd been allowed. "I don't know about any of that, but there's definitely something going on and it's centered in that cemetery. You say the Old Mill is emptied out?"
"It was," said Rian.
"Fine. Then we'll go up to the graveyard. We have two missing people, a mother and her son, Lauretta Bross and Kyran. We'll find them if we can, and destroy the rest of these zombies or whatever is hiding up there."
"The boy is a magic-spawn," argued Ehina.
Here we go, though Rian.
"He's dangerous and must be killed too," she continued. "If you are to succeed."
Chief Campbell looked around. "Magic-spawn?"
"The necromancer has taken over Kyran," said Edward, speaking down to the police chief. "A necromancer is a kind of wizard with a focus on dark magic. He's using Kyran somehow to do all these magic spells."
Campbell looked like most of that went over his head. "We're not going to kill anyone," he said firmly. "Especially not civilians."
Rian felt some relief at that.
"Then, you'll fail," said Ehina. "Molan is powerful. You have no idea what you are up against!"
"Well, I guess we'll find out."
"We'll come with you," said Aldena. "We can help."
"No," said Chief Campbell. "Let us handle this problem."
"She's right," Rian tried to persuade him. "You'll need all the help you can get."
"I think we'll be fine," said Campbell. "We don't need help, especially from you, young man." He turned and began organizing his men.
Rian sat down and watched in frustration.
Further arguing was pointless. No one listened to Rian, not even Daren, who also ignored Aldena's suggestions. Maybe Rian could have tried harder, but he felt relieved to have the professionals taking the lead.
