In the confusion on the field in front of the crypt, Haley's mom, Jenna, retreated as the winged mosquito-like creature flew at her in rapid succession, trying to get through her defenses. She had on armor and she fought with a sword, so far deflecting its attacks.
Nearby, Zane thrashed around on the bare earth as he succumbed to the poisoned stinger now embedded in his spine. The creature that delivered it, released him and flew off to land on a rock. The thing began to die, its task completed.
Already, Zane's skin began to turn a sickly green color, as he began the transformation to a battle wight. His bones thickened and jutted out farther than before, giving him an almost skeletal look. His hair withered and thinned, making him look like an old man, as the old Zane vanished.
Desperately, Rian fought the winged insect-creature in front of him. He did not want to end up like Westin or Zane! Though he feared that eventually the thing would wear him down and get behind him.
Surely, Molan was laughing at them. He watched all the proceedings with grim satisfaction.
Just when Rian thought that he couldn't go any longer, and that defeat was inevitable, Aunt Aldena arrived to assist him.
"Got mine," was all she said. Some good news, at least. Nothing else had gone right this Halloween evening.
"Harlan, stay back!" shouted Jenna, as her husband advanced, his homemade armor barely covering his elbows and legs. He was no fighter!
"Not a chance," said Harlan. "I'm going to stay by your side." He ran towards her, swinging his hastily sharpened, decorative sword with determination.
With Harlan 15 feet away, the creature's attention was split in two, giving Jenna some respite.
