Chapter Sixteen

Rhi sighed heavily as she sat on the bunk across from Mae. Torn had told her earlier that Deitonin was exiled the day before, this was the first she had heard of it.

Mae was still asleep, curled up into a tight ball and trembling. She slowly stood and moved over to her, "Mae...?" She asked gently shaking her awake.

She stirred, making a noise as her eyes fluttered open. Rhi stepped back, watching Her as she looked around, meeting her gaze soon after, "He...he's gone...isn't he...?"

Rhi looked away and nodded.

Mae pressed her hands to her face as she began to weep. She sat down on the bed beside Mae and gently embraced her.

Rhi frowned, then reached into her pocket and pulled out a necklace she had mounted her pearl in. It wasn't anything special, just a little metal net surrounding the pearl and hung from a simple length of leather.

Please don't cry...Mae... Deitonin's voice rang from the pearl, making Rhi flinch and almost drop it.

This made her look up, her eyes reddened, "D-Dei...?"

Then the pearl started the glow a soft blue color, That's right.

Mae took the pearl in trembling hands and looked at it, "Dei...why d-didn't you l-let me come w-with you...?

There was the sound of someone climbing, then he responded, I didn't want you hurt...

"I'm so sorry, Dei..."

Please don't...Look, Ashelin gave me this beacon thingy, so I should be okay.

"A beacon...?" Mae asked.

Yeah, it's blinking and beeping kind of loud. He suddenly paused, Wait, I just saw something... another pause, Nope...mirage...

Mae looked up to Rhi, then back to the necklace.

Rhi frowned, "Dei...? What are you seeing?"

A really huge...car? He replied.

They frowned, exchanging glances.

The sound of an engine approaching could be heard through the pearl, Hey, I'll call you guys back when I get the chance.

Mae frowned, "Wait Dei...!"

Yeees?

"P-please be safe..." She tells him.

The sound of him kissing something could be heard, Love you...and I will be!

The pearl stopped glowing soon afterward. Tears formed in her eyes again, "Why did this happen...?"

Rhi hesitated before putting the necklace around Mae's neck, "I don't know...but I...I could send you to him if you'd like...?"

Mae looked to her, "You could do that...?"

"Yeah...for you I'd do anything..."

"Thank you...!" She exclaimed hugging her.

Rhi hugged her back, "You're welcome."

Mae hesitated before pulling away.

Rhi looked over to Scout, "Do you wanna go with her...?"

He chirped and moved to Mae's side, nudging her leg.

Rhi smiled, "Alright...Get ready and I'll send you."

Scout jumped into Mae's arms and nuzzled her lovingly. She got her satchel from the bed and nodded, "Okay."

Rhi looked over and picked up Deitonin's satchel, "Here."
