Konimi Cosette (Age 7)

A small groan escaped my lips, and my eyelids fluttered open.

"She's awake!"

White blinded my eyes as I tried to sit up on my elbows, only to groan as I felt immense pain sear through my body.

"Itte, itte, itte!" I gasped, my voice coming out raspy and soft as I crumbled back down. My head hit something soft, and I blinked as my eyes adjusted to the light.

I'm... on a bed...?

"Careful, careful, don't sit up yet!" the same voice cried out. An unfamiliar woman loomed over me, and I frowned.

"I don't... know you..." I whispered weakly. I winced in pain as the words tumbled out.

"I know," she said with a sigh. "I'm a nurse. You're in a hospital."

As if on cue, a beep resounded, and I slowly turned my head to the right to see a weird-looking machine.

"What... is..." I gasped for breath as I turned back to the nurse. "What is that...?"

"It's a heart monitor machine, Konimi-chan."

"Oh..." my voice trailed off, and I stared at the ceiling as the nurse moved from my view.

"Do you want something to---"

"Mama..." I whispered, my eyes half-closed as I cut her off. "Papa..."

"Konimi-chan...?"

"I want... to see them... Where... where are they...?"

There was a silence. I turned my head to the nurse. "Why... aren't they here?"

She bit her lip. "Do you know why you're here, Konimi-chan?" Her voice was soft and gentle.

"No..." It hurt so much to talk, but I needed to know where my parents were.

"You were in a car accident, Konimi-chan. Do you know what that is?"

I frowned, my brain processing the information.

"Your papa was driving the car. Do you remember?"

"Yes..." I drew in a ragged breath and steadily exhaled.

"What else do you remember, Konimi-chan?"

I closed my eyes, trying to even my breath as I struggled to remember the other day's events. "He... looked back at me... to check if I was okay..." I paused to gasp for breath.

"It's okay. Take your time."

"Mama was... she was... busy... with her laptop... nobody was looking ahead..."

My eyes flew open in horror as the scene played repeatedly in my head, and I started to breathe rapidly.

The nurse came to my aid instantly. "No no no! Breathe calmly! It's okay! Konimi-chan, breathe!"
