Chapter Three: Canidate 289

Exodus, Planet Reach 2517 2200 Hours

"Ok Daniel it's time to head to bed. You have school." My dad said getting up.

I sat up from the floor and turned to face him. "But daddy its just only half way."

He chuckled and turned to mom. She laughed and shook her head. "No we all have a work and school. We can finish this tomorrow. Ok?"

I smiled and nodded. "Alright."

I got up and headed towards the hall. "Do you I need to take a bath?" I asked looking back to see my parents behind me

"No sweetheart, just go bed. You'll take one in the morning." My mom said putting her hands in my shoulders.

I nodded my head and went to my room. "You reading to me today?" I asked turning to my mom.

She shook her head. "Not tonight honey it's too late. But I can tell you a short story if you like?"

I nodded my head smiling jumping into bed. My dad kissed my mom night and went to their bedroom. She turned back to me, tuning on my lamp, than turning my light off.

"Ok," she tapped her chin, thinking of a story, than sitting next to his bed. She smiled and than turned to him. "Ah! So have I told you the story about the lone wolf?"

My eyebrows knit together, in confusion. "No I don't think I have."

She smiled than nodded. "Well tonight you will been told. So once upon a time there was a wolf. And he was seeking for a place called 'Paradise' Traveling along through a forest..."

"Why is he by himself mom?" I asked confused and kinda sad.

She frowned. "Well the wolf did have a pack, but they were killed by humans," I frowned with her. "Anyways when he was walking he was very hungry and tired. So he decided to stop in a cave to sleep and hunt later. When he reached into the cave he heard a faint growl in the cave. He tensed up and looked around to find another wolf laying down by himself but than noticing couple others laying down. He growled back than backed up leaving the cave. Not to long a pup was following him. Closely. When the wolf looked behind the pup jumped behind a tree. 'Hiding'. The wolf rolled his eyes and went towards the pup. The pup jumped and tripped over himself sitting on his butt now. The wolf looked at him angrily. Telling him to go home. To back to the pack. The pup didn't listen and sat closer to the wolf. The wolf than just walked off. He watched the pup jumping, running, and barking here and there. It was entertaining to him making him feel less alone. Couple hours later they 'camped' next to couple trees. The pup was sitting far from the wolf thinking he would like his space. The wolf laid down than looked over at the pup. He groaned than got up picking the pup by its extra fur putting him next to him. While sleeping he heard a crunch,"

I gasped. "The humans?" I whispered.

She nodded. "When the wolf looked up there were humans with rifles looking at them. He growled. His deep growl woke up the pup. The pup scoot into the wolf. The wolf stood up and stood in front if the pup. The men shot the wolf jumped over to the side and biting one of the men. When he was finishing the man the wolf looked up and one of the other men stood aiming his gun at him. The wolf knew it was too late and just let fate take him. When the man shot, he heard a whimper, not his whimper, the pup's."

"No." I whispered getting sad again.

"The wolf opened his eyes looking down to see the pup covered in blood. He looked back up and attacked the man, killing him. He turned and ran to the pup. The pup was barely alive but to only tell him one thing. Was to make it to paradise." She said smiling. She placed one of her hands on my cheek. "My mom told me that story when I was your age. I didn't understand the ending until I got older. But now I know, no matter how big or small you are you can save anything or anyone. Just to get what you want."

I glared than smiled. "I hate that story."

She chuckled. "I did too. Ok now bed!"

"Ok." I groaned feeling my mom kiss my forehead. "Goodnight mom love you."

"Goodnight love you too."

She turned off my light and shut the door. I rolled over to my side and saw my window open. I shrugged it off than rolled back over seeing under my door with all the lights off.

I closed my eyes than felt something over my mouth. My shot my eyes open. Seeing men in my room with them holding another kid. I screamed but it was muffled by whatever this was on my mouth. They put me over their shoulder when they started to walk out. I watch them replacing me with...me.
