Chapter Eight: Last Gets Nothing

Reach Military Complex, Planet Reach 2517 1640 Hours ~Rebeka P.O.V.~

"Welcome back trainees!" Chief Mendez said. I looked behind him seeing a course.

Everyone started to settle down and listen. "Today is 'Ring the Bell'. Who ever time makes it out last won't get dinner."

Everyone gasped, said 'oh no', grumbled, groaned. 2 other boys came next to me. "Names James and this is Daniel." The boy with the same hair style as everyone else's, buzzed cut, and brown, with brown eyes.

Daniel side waved. "Hi." His hair was buzzed cut brown also but with hazel eyes.

I smirked at both of them. "Hi names Rebeka."

"Line up behind this line." He said. Everyone did what was told. And everyone was next to their teammates.

"Alright so it looks like it's easy. Just don't fall off those platforms that are hanging off the ground. Than running. Climbing. Than straight from there is the pole with the bell." Daniel's explained.

"Alright like he said team passes the line, no one leaves each other got it?" James said looking at both of us.

"Got it." Daniel responded looking ahead.

"Rebeka?" James asked looking at me.

I turned to face the course. "Got it." Nodding my head.

"Go!" Chief Mendez yelled.

All of us started to run but one kid ran in front of everyone. Wow team player. I was a bit ahead of them, but kept a good distance, for them to still be behind me. I looked over and another team was almost ahead of us. "James not trying to be..."

"Yeah we know, come on Daniel keep up the pace." He said, their footsteps started to get louder and were next to me.

We reached those platforms and hopped one foot at a time. I felt the platforms go down when I stepped, than up when I left. I jumped to the other side almost losing my balance.

I turned around and saw that they were a few behind. "Just get climbing we are right behind you." James yelled.

I nodded and ran to see that same boy. It was only him. I smirked good we are in the lead. I sprinted to the wall and grabbed the rope. Once again I looked back to see them very close than climbed it.

Once I got to the top I kneeled down and looked down to see James just in arms reach. I stretch my hand out and grabbed his forearm. When I pulled him up we heard the bell ring than 'First!'.

James frowned. "Don't worry it's only one. He left his team." I told him. "Go I got Daniel."

James nodded and ran to the pole. I reached out and grabbed Daniel's arm. We both hurriedly got up and dust ourselves off. "Thanks." He smiled than started to run.

"No problem." I ran next to him watching James start to climb.

"Lady's first." Daniel said offering me to go.

I nodded and started to climb right behind James. I heard the bell ring. Than I tapped the bell making it ring. Few seconds after, the bell rang. We all ran to the finish line looking at the one kid.

He looked like his proud than was slowly getting to shame. Once everyone got up here. We saw a blonde kid, probably a head taller than anyone of us, punch the first kid that was here. He fell on his back, than grunted when Chief Mendez stepped on his chest. "Good job trainees everyone eats, except for 117's team!"

We cheered high fiving each other. "Great job!"

"But I was first." 117 spat.

"Yes you were first. But your team came in last. If your team falls you fall." Chief Mendez stated.

I thought about it than noticed he was right. If we don't work together as a team we all will probably be killed by this enemy we are training against.

"Hey you wanna sit by us?" Daniel asked looking over at James. James smiled and nodded.

"Sure why not? Can my friend Jake sit with us too?" I asked watching Jake come with another girl.

When they both reached us. James spoke up. "Sure why not," we all started to walk. "Names James." He looked over at Jake and the girl.

"Hi James. I am Jake," he looked over at Daniel. "Yours?"

"Daniel and who's the girl?" he asked pointing at the girl she had little blue eyes.

She smiled. "My name is Toria."

"Toria that's a cool name." I said looking at her.

She smiled and nodded. "What's your name?"

"Rebeka named right after my mom's middle name." I said proudly.

She nodded. "That's a really pretty name also."

I smiled. "Thanks."

We all got to the commons and grabbed tray for our food. We laughed, made jokes, and even talked about our old home.

Dr. Halsey was right. This is my new family. My new home.
