Reaping day. The day when one girl, and one boy, through the ages of 18 through 25, will go off to the capital, into an arena, to the Sex Games.
Yes, you may think that the annual Sex Games may be the most looked forward event each year, but you're wrong. It is the most dreaded. At least for district 12.
In all the districts, everyone still has their virginity. You are not allowed to have sex, until after you turn 21, or if you are chosen for the games. You're not even allowed to kiss. And if you violate those rules, and you have sex, you will be sentenced to death. Extreme, I know.
But the day of the reaping is the most dreaded day for district 12. Everyone doesn't like the idea of the Sex Games. Everyone thinks, even I, that our virginity should be lost to the person we love, to the one we will be committed to, forever. Not some stranger in an arena.
So today is the day of the reaping. My name is put in there, at least 60 times, for trying to buy food for my family. District 12 is a poor district, the only riches is coal. Yes, our district is the mining district.
My odds of going to the games are great. Probably greater than any other girl.
