Chapter seven

It was on the same day that Greyson has come home a little early than usual for dinner.

He looked glum and miserable, but Danielle was too terrified to ask him why. Lately she felt like between her and Greyson was no more than a servant and her master. Greyson came home when he wanted to, and Danielle would have the food ready for him.

They rarely speak about what happened to them that day. But Danielle was so happy with having Emma as her new neighbor, she just had to tell it Greyson, forgetting her boundaries.

“She was so friendly, and she came here all the way from New Jersey. Imagine that! Someone from New Jersey moving in next to us! You really have to meet her. She’s just the type of sweet, kind neighbor you would think of.” Danielle said merrily.

Greyson replied nothing, just sat there looking down on his dinner plate, pushing the mashed potato around the plate with his fork.

“And she has just gotten divorced with her husband, but she didn’t tell me why. Just she said that first marriage wouldn’t last more than five years.” Danielle laughed as she continued. “who would believe that? I’ve seen lots of people who have been married for over half their life and they are still happy together.”

Greyson still said nothing, letting Danielle talk on and on about Emma.

“And she had a daughter, her name is Ruth, and she is just adorable! You should have seen her, she was like one of the most adorable kid you would imagine. And now Ronan has a friend to play with, isn’t that right Ronan?”

Ronan nodded happily. He too was joining in the fun, thought he didn’t know what Danielle was fussing about. Just seeing Danielle happy would make Ronan happy. He sat there smiling his not completely toothed mouth.

Greyson didn’t seem to enjoy watching them being happy whilst he had problems to worry about.

How could they, he seem to thought, sitting there laughing when I have problems? How could they?

Danielle talked on and on, somehow still not noticing Greyson’s facial expressions.

“Could you be quiet for a moment?” Greyson asked suddenly, his voice low but steady.

“What?” Danielle asked, blinking her eyes.

“I said, could you be quiet for a moment? I'm trying to eat here.”

Danielle looked furious. “But, I'm trying to tell you about Emma-“

“I don’t care about her, okay?” Greyson said, forking a small piece of steak into his mouth.

Danielle's mouth opened and close like a fish.

“You never care about anything I do!” Danielle said angrily.

“I have problems at the studio, and I was kinda hoping I could get some rest at home. Turns out I have to sit here and listen to you fussing about that girl from New Jersey.”

“She’s not that girl, her name is Emma. And what's wrong about me telling you about her, you never want to listen-“

“Danielle!” Greyson cried suddenly, cutting her words short. “I really hope you could just shut up now.”

Danielle burst into tears. “ What is wrong with you Greyson? Why are you like this now?”

Greyson said nothing, continuing to spread his mashed potato all around his plate.

Danielle left the table and ran upstairs. She cried and shut the bedroom door shut with a loud slam.

Greyson looked up at the stairs, not bothering to go and console her. Ronan too, looked up, but he didn’t dare to leave the dinner table. He just sat there, looking at his plate, hoping that Danielle would come there and take him away from Greyson.
