Chapter 12

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Kaylyn, happy birthday to you!”

I cracked open my eyes, still tired. My whole family was huddled next to my bed and standing over me.

My dad looked tired and weary, probably because he’d just gotten in from a business trip the night before. AJ looked half bored, with Maddie grinning at his side. My mom also had a huge grin on her face.

“Where’s my present?” I joked. My mom rolled her pretty grey eyes but continued smiling nonetheless.

“You’ll get your presents when you come home later,” she said. I’d told them I was going shopping, but I didn’t specifically tell them who with. I guessed that they just assumed I was going with Lilly.

I threw my covers off of me, surprised when I saw I was still in the dress I had been wearing the day before…for my date. Wait a minute, how did I get to my room? The last thing I remembered was falling asleep, but rather warm, like I was in someone’s arms.

“I’m going to take a shower,” I said, trying to imply that I wanted my family to leave my room.

“Well then bye!” AJ called, already half way out the room. I assumed he did not want to be in the room when I took a shower, as I was one of his baby sisters. The rest of my family followed, except Madelyn.

“Happy birthday, KayKay!” she squealed, then ran over to hug me. I picked her up and spun her around, hugging her all the while.

“I love you, Maddie,” I said as I set her down.

“I love you, too!” she said, smiling broadly. Her dimples popped out, making her even cuter.

“I’m going to take a shower now,” I said. “Why don’t you go play?”

“Okay!” she squeaked and ran out of the room. I closed the door behind her and went into my bathroom, throwing the crumpled dress in a corner and taking a long, hot shower. When I finally got out, my big mirror was completely steamed up.

I blow dried my hair, taking my sweet time, then went to my closet and opened the door. I looked through everything I owned, not sure what to wear. I mean, I was going shopping and I’d be buying a bunch of designer stuff, though I didn’t presently own anything designer.

I sighed and put what looked to me like a light blue v neck, and white short shorts. I put on white sandals, since I’d be trying on clothes and I needed something that’d be easy to slip on and off.

I looked at the time on my phone, and saw it was only eight thirty. Had I really been up so early? I shrugged, then ran down the steps into the kitchen.

“Happy birthday!”

I was suddenly clobbered by Lilly, who gave me a bone crushing hug.

“Thank you!” I exclaimed. She began to sing but I glared at her, abruptly making her stop.

“Sorry, I forgot you hate singing,” she said apologetically. I nodded, then skipped over to my mom at the stove.

“What’s cookin’, good lookin’?” I said, feeling rather bubbly and happy. My mom laughed, which sounded like tinkling bells.

“I’m making your favorite breakfast,” she said after recovering. A huge grin suddenly appeared on my face; she always made me my favorite breakfast on my birthday.
