Chapter 13
Once Lilly reached the salon and spa, she practically dragged me out of her car. We ran inside and were seated in massage chairs immediately, since I was like royalty to them…and it may have helped that Lilly had set up an appointment.
I chose a pale pink-well, that’s what the lady told me it was-for my toes and nails. Somehow Lilly convinced me to get my hair cut, to “look pretty” for my birthday dinner.
An hour and a half later, I walked out with a manicure and pedicure, plus a hair cut.
They didn’t really chop off any inches, more like just trimmed it, but they did give me some bangs. I quite liked it, since it was a new look for me. Lilly drove us to my house so we could get dressed for my dinner, which was at some fancy restaurant my parents had booked.
We both ran up to my room, abruptly excited at the idea of dressing up. I saw my bed-and half my floor-covered in shopping bags from the day’s adventures.
I ripped open one that I knew had dresses in, and threw one to Lilly. I skipped to my bathroom and curled my hair a bit, then put on a little make up.
I slipped on the grey chiffon dress and did a little twirl, liking how it looked on me. I walked out of the bathroom and saw Lilly had straightened her hair and done her make up as well.
“Well look at you!” she squealed, looking me up and down. “You look amazing! Where’s Jack when we need him? He’d totally be drooling!”
I chuckled and shook my head at her, then dug out some high heels. Lilly told me they were pale pink and matched my nails, so I put them on my feet. Lilly was dressed too and soon enough, she dragged me down the stairs.
“What now?” I moaned as we finally reached the living room. She flashed me a smile-making me suspicious-and went through the kitchen door, waiting for me to follow.
I stepped in, and immediately noticed that my whole family was huddled up.
“Um, may I ask what’s going on?” I questioned hesitantly.
“KayKay!” Madelyn squealed, then ran over to me and hugged my legs.
“We have your presents,” my mother said with a warm smile. My dad and AJ left the room for a moment, then returned. They both held a few packages.
“Thank you,” I said, smiling. The presents were set on the kitchen table, and I immediately went to sit by them. Everyone else sat at the table, with Lilly and Madelyn at my sides.
I tore the blue paper off the first one and it revealed a rectangular box. I looked at the picture shown, and saw my parents had gotten me a new laptop.
“For college,” my dad piped up. AJ grumbled something about how he didn’t get anything when he went to college, but everyone ignored him as usual. The next box was a new video camera, one I’d been admiring for the better part of a year.
My parents also got me a new phone case, a North Face backpack, a few books and a gift card.
“There is just one more thing…” AJ trailed off, not meeting my eyes.
“Well, what is it?” I demanded. After waiting all day, I kind of wanted to see what my big present was.
“Come see for yourself!” Lilly exclaimed, making me suspicious again. She was in on it, too? Well, my parents were definitely good planners with these kinds of things.
I was dragged into the garage by everyone, but forced to keep my eyes closed. Finally I could open them, and I gasped.
“Oh my little weasels!” I squeaked. “It’s so adorable! He or she?!”
