Chapter 31: Papers and Revalations

I explained things to my parents, and they agreed that they would be in danger around our guests.

Carlisle called us all together to explain the final plans for the next few days. “Normally we would travel in sturdier clothing, but considering we did not for-see this and all the stores are closed at this hour of the night, we will simply have to make due and but them as we go along.  Edward and Bella will stay at our old house to wait for our friends and guests, I expect the Denalis will arrive first. Bella’s parents will stay here at Jacob’s, and the pack has graciously agreed to guard Ben until we return. I’d advise everyone to stay away from him as much as possible. We’ve searched his pockets and he doesn’t seem to have any other weapons on him, but we can’t be too sure. Or too careful.” He paused. “I’m sorry we must impose on you, friends. And I’m sorry that we are once again endangering your lives. Thank you for you help.” He nodded at Sam and Jacob.

They said their goodbyes, and raced off into the night.

Edward and I walked over to Max, who was standing by himself in a corner, trying to look invisible.

“Max?” I asked. He looked up at me worriedly. “Can Edward and I talk to you for a minute?” I held out my hand, and he warily took it. I led him out onto the front porch where Edward was waiting, Renesme on his knee.

“Max,” I said, sitting down and pulling him into my lap. “We know that what happened was not your fault. Ben had control over you, we get that. We also know that you have no home, and no parents anymore.”

He nodded slowly, still not meeting my eyes.

“How would you feel about having Edward and I for parents?” I smiled at him.

His eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, wide in disbelief. “Really? You mean it?”
I looked at Edward, who was grinning widely. “Yes, I mean it. We want to have you as part of our family….you’ve had to be an adult for too long now, Max; it’s time for you to be a kid again.”

He threw his small arms around me and hugged me tightly. Edward stood as Max hopped off my lap. He handed me Renesme, and picked up Max, hugging him tightly. “Welcome to out family Max.” He said smiling.

Despite the looming war that was soon to take place, I was happy. For a few moment, the war slipped my mind entirely, and I was able to relish the sight of my husband hugging our new son. I imagined that if Edward and I were a normal human couple, this is how he might look if I had just given birth to our first son, and Edward was holding him for the first time.

In that moment, there were no Volturi, they didn’t even exist. It was just the four of us: myself, my husband, my daughter, and my son.

I held Renesme in my arms as Edward and I ran back to our old house, Edward carrying Max in his arms.

“This is so cool!” Max shouted. I looked over at him and smiled again.

“My old parents never took me running like this!” His adorable face was plastered with a giant grin.

We reached the house in no time, and set the kids down on the couch. Renesme and Max had taken to each other immediately. He was fascinated by her gift, and had not stopped asking her to show him things until we insisted they stop so we could go home.

She reached up to him now and touched his face once more. Edward laughed.

“What is it?”
”She’s showing him the time she made Jacob play dress up. Make up and everything.”
