Chapter 44: The fight, Part II

“What?!” My heart, had it still been beating, would have stopped.

I lost the battle of wills, and opened my eyes.

My daughter and son were running into the clearing, strait for the center.

‘We have to go!” I said, turning to Edward. He grabbed my hand, and together we jumped off of the edge of the ridge, strait into the fight below us.

At once we were set upon by soldiers and guards. The bloodlust that had been seeping from my pores was vanquished by my complete and utter terror for my children. There was no way we could get to them before someone hurt them.

I could see them through gaps in the fighting vampires. Renesme ran right past Charlotte, and punched her in the knee. Charlotte looked down, confused, and gaped at Renesme. Max attacked Peter, jumping on him and punching him in the face.

When Edward and I reached them, we tore them off of Peter and Charlotte, who had obviously not retaliated their attacks, but rather had stood there letting the children beat them up.

“What are you doing?!” I demanded as I grabbed Renesme off of Charlotte. She squirmed in my arms, turning herself around to face me. When she saw that it was me, she smiled an evil little smile, and bit me in the neck. I pulled her away. “Renesme! No!”

Max was doing the same to Edward. “What has gotten into them?” I asked.

Edward’s eyes grew wide in realization.

“What?” I demanded. “What is it?”

“It’s like you said, something got into them.” He flipped Max around and examined the back of his neck. He nodded in confirmation. “As I thought. Look.” He turned Max’s back to me and showed me the small scar on the back of our son’s neck. I checked Renesme, and found an identical one on the back of her neck as well.

“What the hell are they?” I asked, worried that I had not noticed them before.

“Ben implanted controllers in them.” He darkly. “He must have implanted Max’s years ago, the scar is faint. He must have implanted Renesme’s when he kidnapped her and ran with her.”

“Oh god….Well what do we do? We have to fight here, I have to focus on my shield. If we let go of them they’ll just attack us and get themselves hurt.”

“We have to take them out.” He said simply.

“How? We haven’t got anything that can penetrate their skin.”

“Yes we have. Our teeth.”

The utter horror of what he was saying hit me. Bite my own daughter? Was he serious?!
