Chapter 45: Didn’t See That One Coming…

My eyes bored into those of my best friend’s. They were no longer wide, in a frozen expression of endless pain. They were tired, and confused.

“Bella?” He repeated.

My voice wouldn’t work. I tried to say the words, but nothing came out.

Jacob gave me a comically quizzical look. The expression was so contrasted to what it had been only moments before that I let out an awkward laugh, and lunged at him, wrapping my arms around him.

He hugged me back, still confused. “Hey, hey, it’s okay, honey. What’s wrong?”

“You don’t remember?” Edward asked.

Jacob shook his head, then frowned. “I remember being attacked, and…..” his furrowed brow smoothed out as his expression went vacant, remembering the horrific attack. “Oh god…..how am I still alive? And perfectly fine?”

Rene sheepishly raised her hand slowly. “That was me. I don’t know how it happened, one minute I was wishing I could have saved you, the next there was a warmth spreading down my arms and hands into your chest, and you came back to us.” She shrugged.

I pulled away from him, looking into his deep brown eyes. “Are you okay? Really?”

He smiled wolfishly at me. “I’m fine, Bells. Really.”

“Good to see you alive, kid.” Charlie grumbled from  beside us, still pinning Demetri.

“Whoa! Charlie! The eyes! Freaky, man!” He grinned. Charlie shot him a death glare. The tension deflated momentarily.

Jacob got to his feet, stumbling and loosing his balance a couple of times. I sprang to my feet, helping his steady himself. When I looked up, I was shocked to see that all the wolves were crowded around us, as well as a few vampires. Most of the, however, were still gathered in the center, where Carlisle and Carmen still held guns on Caius and Aro.

Jacob leaned on Edward’s shoulder, and hobbled over with the rest of the group to see what was going on.

“Please, old friend, spare us.” Aro said softly.

“Do not call me that!” Carlisle spat. “You ceased being my friend the moment you ordered the attack on us. You cannot pick and choose your friends where it suits you best, Aro. You choose your friends, and you stick with them, no matter what.”

“I never wanted to kill you, it was the other two, I swear it!” Aro’s voice trembled as he accused his brethren.
