We met the next day at Charlie's house. We were all more relaxed now that Rene knew our secret. As we were driving over, a thought struck me.
"Edward, you don't think they'll get involved because we told her, do you?"
"Who, love?"
I glanced at Renesme in the back seat, and mouthed "the VOLTURI"
His eyes widened a bit. "I hadn't though of that...but no, I don't think they will. They didn't when Charlie found out. Besides," he leaned over to whisper so low even Renesme wouldn't be able to hear him. "There's no point. Please don't take this the wrong way, hun, but she's almost 90, after all..."
I nodded solemnly.
That was something I hadn't wanted to think about quite yet.
We pulled into the driveway and Alice came skipping out to meet us. She had stayed in my old room, preferring to stay up late talking with Charlie.
"Hi guys, hey Renesme!" She cooed as she picked her up out of the back seat. "Charlie has lunch ready. Well, for her anyways." She winked at us.
We went in to find Charlie, Rene, Phil, Sue, Jacob, and Billy all seated around in the living room.
"Whoa!" Jacob said when he saw us.
"What?" we both said. "You guys need to...uh..." he glanced at the humans. "Let's just say your eyes are black."
"Oh!" I said. "Wow I actually completely forgot. I was so distracted with my family. Um, dad? Could you maybe watch Renesme for a few hours?"
He nodded. "Sure, Bells. Do I want to ask why?"
I winked. "Nope."
Edward and I ran out the door at our normal speed. So to them, one second we were there, the next we were gone. I could hear Rene exclaiming as we left, "Oh my god! Charlie, what happened to her? Where did she go? Is she ok?"
"Yes, Rene, she's fine. Relax. Edward takes excellent care of her, and she's fine anyways. They're just...going for a run."
Nice save, dad! Rene wasn't ready for the blood part yet.
We jumped in the car, and sped out of town. When we reached a good distance of at least 40 or 50 miles from the town's border, we climbed out and changed our shoes. We always kept a pair of running sneakers in the back incase of emergencies like this. It occurred to me that we hadn't hunted in about 3 weeks. The realization brought with it a raging, burning sensation at the back of my throat. Yikes!
I changed my high heels to sneakers, and Edwards changed out of his dressy shoes.
We held hands and sped off into the trees.
After a few minutes, I let go of his hand, and took off in front of him. I could hear and feel him chasing behind me, but I didn't slow down. It was more fun this way.
I smelled something off to the East, so I turned sharply. We found a herd of deer in a clearing, and caught a few.
By now, I had learned how to drink without drenching myself and getting all messed up. My jeans and blouse didn't receive a single drop.
When we were finished, we continued running for a few miles, just for the sheer joy of it. Edward loved the speed, and I loved racing him.
I pulled ahead of him, and heard him chasing behind me. He growled, and almost caught me, but I turned sharply and jumped up into a tree.
He turned around and jumped up after me, knocking me to the forest ground below. It didn't hurt a bit.
Actually, it was wonderful, because he landed on top of me. He stared into my eyes, and kissed me. 50 years, and this never gets old. I know it never will.
