*not my gif*

I sat in the basement of my foster dad's house and shivered. I pulled the sleeves of my thin sweater down over my hands and curled my legs into my torso. My butt was numb from sitting on the concrete floor for so long. I felt a hot drop of water fall onto my cheek then realized that it was a tear.

"What's wrong, Bay?" I lifted my head at the sound of my brother's voice and wiped the tear away.

"What do you think? And I told you not to call me that. You know I hate my middle name." He smiled down at me.

"It will get better, don't worry." He had a look on his face that told me he knew something I didn't as he sat down beside me. I pulled a tattered picture out of the pocket of my jeans shorts. I laid my head on my brother's shoulder and unfolded the photo. Looking at it, I smiled. Why couldn't I go back to that moment? Why couldn't I stop my family from dying in that car accident? Oh yeah, that's right. It's because I was only a baby. There's nothing I could have done. I have remind myself all the time that I'm lucky to be alive but then I remember my current situation and wonder if I really am lucky to be alive.

"Maybe I should have just died that day with you, Mom, and Dad." Conrad suddenly sat up and turned to me. He lifted my chin and looked into my eyes.

"Don't ever say that again. Do you understand me, Ryder Bay Livix? You have been blessed with this life."

"But-"

"No. No buts." I giggled. "I'm serious! One day you will get out of this hell and you will make something of yourself. You'll meet a guy and fall in love and get married at an appropriate age and make me an uncle." He smiled and put my head on his shoulder once again. "And you never know, maybe that day will come sooner than you think."

"I like the sound of that." I closed my eyes for one second before my peace was once again interrupted.

"Hey bitch!" Jim Evans's voice traveled down the stairs and rang through my ears.

"I do not like the sound of that." I stood up and brushed my shorts off, taking notice of the scars and chill bumps that scattered my skinny legs.

"Yes, sir?" I yelled back.

"Why isn't this kitchen clean? I told you to clean it!"

"Yes sir!"

"Good! Now get your ass up here before I come down there and make you myself!"

"Coming!" I turned to look at my brother. "Wait for me down here okay?"

"Okay." I went to climb the stair but changed my mind in the last second. I wanted to say one more thing to my brother but he had already disappeared by the time I had thought of it.

I walked up the wooden steps and felt the boards creak beneath my naked and dirty feet. Walking into the kitchen I couldn't help but look at all the beer cans that scattered the room. Some of them were fresh. Just by the sight in front of me, I could tell that night was going to be a bad night.

Jim walked in and grabbed my by my arm.

"When I get back in this kitchen, I want every dish in that sink to sparkle, got it?"

A pungent smell filled my nose. His breath reeked of alcohol.

"Yes, sir." I whispered.

He walked out of the kitchen and into the living room to watch his evening poker games.

I picked up the sponge and soap and went to work. I washed every dish thoroughly and make sure to wash each twice just in case.

I had just finished the last dish when I heard footsteps in the hall.

"Bitch, I better see sparkles on every single dish when I get in there." He growled.

I stood straight next to the sink, proud of my work.

"I don't think I see enough quite enough sparkles," he breathed.

My eyes widened. I knew that the dishes were actually clean enough and that he just wanted a fight. Things were about to get bad.

"But please-"

"Don't talk back to me! I own you! You will show me respect!" He closed the gap in between us. His hand raised and suddenly I was on the floor clutching my cheek.

"You know I don't want to have to do this. But you leave me know choice. You- you're just so......stupid. If you would just do everything right, we wouldn't be in this position."

I scrambled away from him as he stepped closer. My back hits the wall and I know I have no where else to go.

"See, YOU started all of this. When YOU killed her! You killed her not cancer! YOU! I didn't want to take care of a kid, but she did! And I just wanted to make her happy ya know? But of course we get stuck with YOU! And she just adores you. But then she gets cancer, and she can't get better because we don't have enough money for the treatment because we spent it all on YOU!" He screams at me.

I flinch every time he yells you.

He grabs an empty beer bottle from the counter beside him. I see him raise the bottle and feel a sharp pain on my head. He take takes the leftover, broken piece of the bottle and smashes it on the side of my face. My head stirs before I'm enveloped by darkness.

When I woke up, I felt blood trickle down my face and then looked around. I was alone.

I could hear footsteps upstairs and knew that that was my chance. I stood up and ran down the stairs to the basement. I grabbed all of my belongings, which wasn't much, and stuffed them into my bag. As I rushed back up the stairs, I stopped half way at the sound of the doorbell. I heard the front door open and an unfamiliar voice asked how Jim's evening was going to which he responded that it was going perfectly. I walked up the stairs and into the kitchen carefully. I made sure I don't make too many sounds and listened closely.

"I'm sorry to interrupt your nice night but we got some complaints from the neighbors of noises and we're just here to clear things up." I peered around the corner towards the front door. I small noise escaped my mouth as I realized that it was a police officer.

"I'm sure it was just me watching my poker game. It was pretty intense, I'll tell you that." He put on that charm and smiled at the officer.

"Okay, well, I'll leave you to it then." He chuckled and turned to leave. I saw an opportunity and took it.

"Wait! Please!" I called out to the officer. He turned back around and looked at me. His eyes visibly widened at my appearance.

"What are you doing, Ryder?" Jim questioned. "Officer, don't mind her. She is just a confused teenage girl."

"Sir, I believe I will determine that." The officer takes a step inside just as Jim tries to take a swing at him. Luckily the officer is much faster than him and ducks out of the way just in time.

"Alright, that's it. You're coming with me." He shoves him up against the wall and pulls his arms around to his back. As he slaps the handcuffs onto his wrists, the events that just took place finally take hold on my brain and I realize that I'm finally free.
