I woke up in a soft bed but didn't open my eyes. I felt no pain or soreness. It was weird. For the first time I felt no worry, no dread, no concern, but at the same time, no eagerness. For the first time, I felt normal.
But then I opened my eyes.
I saw an unfamiliar ceiling, it was a beige color. Then I looked at the walls around me. They were green and silver and decorated with posters, oddly looking like my room would look like if I had grown up in one room. There were clothes littering the floor, pretty cute clothes I might add, and a black dresser with pictures on it of me and people I had never met before stood against one of the silver walls. Black curtains covered the windows on the wall across from the white door. I got up from the bed and looked out of one of the windows. There were houses that looked exactly alike all lined up in a long row. A perfect, American neighborhood.
Where the hell am I?! I thought.
"Ryder!" A woman's voice called from somewhere below me.
I froze.
"Yes?" I answered, unsure.
"Time for breakfast , honey!"
I looked down at my own body, realizing I was wearing an old t-shirt and running shorts, what I would normally wear to bed. Looking at an alarm clock on the table next to the bed from which I had just awoken, it came to my attention that it was 10 o'clock in the morning. I turned back to the door and slowly opened it, soundlessly looking out at what was on the other side. I saw a twisting hallway that led to a stairway. I stepped out of the room and looked around. There was another door almost right next to the one I had just come out of. The door had a Lord of the Rings and a Harry Potter poster. A boy with nerdy glasses and hair shaded exactly like mine that looked a couple years older than me appeared in the doorway. He was wearing a Star Trek shirt and boxers.
"Hey Bay. How'd ya sleep?" I recognized that he had called me my middle name, which not many people knew. The boy lifted his hand and scratched the back of his head as he yawned.
"Um... good?"
"Is that a question or a statement?" He looked at me and his cocky smirk changed into a concern frown. "What's wrong, Ry? You look like you just saw a ghost..."
"I- Who are you?" It came out harsher than I had intended.
"What are you talking about Bay? I'm your brother, remember? It's me, Conrad Andrew Livix? No? Look, I'm hungry and I'm sure you are too, Miss Pudgy," he said, patting my lower stomach,"so after you are done recovering from your amnesia, join the rest of civilization for pancakes downstairs, okay?"
The boy, Conrad, walked down the hallway chuckling to himself and disappeared down the stairs. I stood, frozen, for a moment, not fully compredhending what had just happened. I had never seen that boy in my life but he claimed to be my brother... Everything around me was unfamiliar. I cautiously made my way down a long curving stairway. I turned a corner into a kitchen. There were three people going about there buisness when I walked in, the boy from the hallway, and two adults I was fairly certain I recognized. A man was sitting at the kitchen table reading a newpaper, eating eggs, bacon, and pancakes. A woman was standing at the oven making eggs and reading a book at the same time.
"Morning Giggle," Wait, what did he just call me? ,"We saved some of your favorites for ya."
I walked to the table and sat down. The woman sat a plate down in front of me, and looking at the food up close, I realized how hungry I was. I grabbed a fork and started devouring the eggs.
"Woah there, slow down. I don't want you to throw up." The woman said.
The woman stood behind the man and rested her arms on the back of his chair. As they both looked at me I suddenly remembered where I knew them from. I put down my fork and looked at them.
"Wait, are you my.... parents?"
"Well, I sure hope so, or else we've just put 16 years worth of good money down the drain." The man- my father- said.
"Peter!" My mom said. "No need to be rude! What's wrong Ryder, you're acting strange."
"She's been like this all morning. She didn't even recognize me in the hallway." Conrad said, with his mouth full, I might add.
"But- but you guys are dead! You died when I was one!"
"I'm pretty sure we're not dead, sweetheart. I'm sure it was just a bad dream." And when those words came out of her mouth, I believed her.
