Chapter 2
A lunch altercation
As I was standing, waiting in the lunch line, I looked around for Brandon; he was nowhere to be found. I took out my phone to text him and ask until it was rudely snatched out my hand. I looked up and saw a smirking Kevin with my phone in his hand; he’s waving it like an immature fifth grader bully in my face. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts teasing and singing ‘na-na-na you can’t get it’. I mean, why me? Why didn’t I just shut up in first period this morning and let him call me ‘Charlie’ and tease me?
I sighed and look him in his amused eyes.
“May I have my phone back, Kevin?” I asked impatiently.
He smiled, “I’ll think about it Charlie.” He said and started to walk away.
I don’t know what overcame me, but I think I’m the Hulk’s cousin or something because the next thing I know, my arm shot out with its own mind and swirled him back around so he was facing me. You could see the shock on his face for me doing anything back.
“Give me my phone, Kevin.” I said, trying to gain my confidence back.
He gently took my hand off his shoulder and glared at me. He unlocked my phone and started to go through it. Curse the golden pineapples for me not putting a lock on it.
“I said I’ll think about it, brat. Now leave me the hell alone.” And with that, he started to walk off again. I squinted my eyes at him, somehow wishing I had powers. I guess I really wasn’t the Hulk’s cousin.
One of Derek’s friends, Peter, popped out of nowhere in front of Kevin and shoved him back. He reminded me of pop-goes-the-weasel, that game you play at arcades and you have to hit it.
Kevin stumbled a little and dropped my phone on the ground, he caught his balance though. I went for it and Kevin reached out to punch me, aiming for my face, but Peter launched at him and grabbed him by the throat, pinning him on the nearby wall. This caused the whole cafeteria to look at us.
“What the fuck man?” Kevin snarled in Peter’s face.
“I hate bullies and I believe he asked for his phone. Your ears seemed a little stuffed so I decided to help you be a nice person.” Peter said, loud enough for our audience to hear. He looked at me, and that was my signal that it was okay to get my phone now. I quickly scrambled to the floor and picked it up, texting Brandon that he needed to hurry up and get in the cafeteria.
“Next time, pick on someone your own damn size.” He let go of Kevin and looked at me. Kevin left, holding his neck where he was held. Once I made sure Kevin was out of sight, I returned Peter’s look. Our audience seemed to be sad about the less violence that was displayed and went back to their own business. Sweat started to roll down my chest as Peter got ready to talk.
“What’s your name, kid?”
“Charles. Charles McGrow.”
“Nice name, I’m Peter. You alright?”
“Yea, uhmm.” I started to scratch my neck. “Thanks.”
“Anytime man.” He slapped my back and I watched him walk away, back to his table of friends. I saw Derek and he seemed to be more into his phone, just like how he was in cooking class.
“Yo Charles!” Brandon called and walked over in front of me. There were complaints about him skipping but he didn’t care. He seemed to be more confused than concerned about hungry impatient kids.
“Why was Peter Hartley talking to you?”
“Kevin was bothering me, and he took care of him.” I said with a smug look on my face and a shrug of the left shoulder. We got our lunch and headed to a booth. I walked right pass Derek and he looked out of it, he had a sad expression also. I wonder what was wrong with him.
I told Brandon about the whole altercation that happened from the time Kevin took my phone to the time he saw Peter slapped my back and left. I couldn’t help but laugh at all the faces he made and comments he said that he couldn’t keep to himself.
The lunch bell came on, and that told us we had five minutes to get to our fifth period class. Brandon and I had the same class, P.E and we walked towards the third building together. We entered the classroom talking about his little sister, Breanna and how she fell by the pool and scraped her knee. I knew that had to hurt, but I also knew she was a tough girl. So I didn’t need to worry about her.
Coach Jarrett came into view, stepping from behind the lockers in the classroom and greeted us with good news.
“Well class, since it’s the first day of school and I am in a good mood. It’s a free day. Enjoy it while you can cause after we get out Physical Education attire, we going to work.” He finished his statement with a smirk. The class filled with excitement, loud cheers and murmurs. I looked at my crazy classmates and noticed one in particular.
Derek was sitting on a bench, this time not on his phone as usual; but he was staring off into space. Lost in thought. I didn’t know I was staring till Brandon’s thumb and middle finger snapped in my face.
Soon enough class over and Derek was the first one up and out of the classroom like fire kissed that sexy ass of his. What was that about?
I walked into my sixth period Art class and sat down. I started to bite my lip, a habit I picked up whenever I was scared, nervous or in thought.
Mrs. Clark started to call attendance and I took out a paper and pencil to scribble on. I found out I wrote Derek’s name and blushed immediately, balling up the paper and stuffing it in my book bag.
“Derek Matterwood?”
There was no reply and I looked up. I didn’t know I had this class with him. Where was he? Did he not know where the art room was?
“Derek Matterwood? Absent? Okay, Charles McGrow?”
I didn’t answer, lost in thought.
“Charles McGrow? Abse-..”
“I’m here Mrs. Clark, I'm here!”
Where is Derek?
