Chapter 6

My Girlfriend

"Don't Wake Me Up" by Chris Brown began to play, waking me up out of my sleep. I blindly felt for the alarm clock to stop the music. After I did so, I got up lazily and headed to the bathroom.

I brushed my teeth, took my bath, dried off and got dressed. Today was Tuesday so I was sporting a purple polo collared shirt, black cargo shorts and my dirty vans. My hair was left undone; I left it the way it was after I dried my hair from washing it.

I took a deep breath, a pack of Wild berry pop tarts and my car keys before heading out the door. My plan was really the only thing on my mind as I made turns and waited for pedestrians to cross the street.

Today I am going to solve all my problems; I am going to get a girlfriend. Yup, thats right.. This homoesexual man is going to get a damn girlfriend. Did I mention it loud enough? I AM GOING TO GET A GIRLFRIEND!

With that thought on my mind I made my way through the double doors of Carlington Heights High after parking my car in a deserted area. I spotted Derek immediately and this mourning feeling overwhelmed me.

I wanted to be by him so badly, to touch him. I wanted to talk to him. I wanted to laugh with him, have a decent conversation. These feelings towards him were not understandable, I mean I knew I had a crush on him but those feelings were gone. I am actually in love with him without a relationship. Is that even possible?

"One of these days, you’re going to get caught my friend." Brandon whispered in my ear, his breath fanning my left cheek.

"What you talking about?" I asked, confused.

"You're staring at Derek like he's a bag full of ripe, juicy apples."

"That's a great comparison, because juicy? He is." I said playfully, licking my lips. Brandon just laughed and pushed me, making me stumble a bit. Two arms caught me and steadied me on my feet once again. I looked up to find a pair of honey golden eyes returning the gaze.

"Yo, you okay?" Peter asked me. I just smiled and nodded. He only told me to be careful next time, and left.

"Where does he be coming from?" I asked Brandon. I mean, this dude just comes out of nowhere all the freaking time.

"He's your protector, Charles. He's always there." He replied like a smart-ass.

We headed to our first period class and I took a confident breath. This morning isn't going to be full of staring at Derek; I'm going to flirt like there's no tomorrow.

"Alright class, today we are going to bake cookies. We're starting off with something easy." Mr. Parker announced. Everyone cheered and went to a cooking counter.

After going to the back –far away from Derek-- I gathered the dough and started to mix the ingredients in; I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around.

"Umm hey, can I work with you?" She asked, giving off pearly whites as she smiled. I guess people knew of my plan, because this was going easier than I thought.

"Yeah … sure," I said, moving over, making space for her on the counter. I gave her the mixing bowl and the big wooden spoon. She took it and continued to blend the eggs, water, oil, sugar and dough together. I went for the steel pan and greased it with non-stick spray.

"So, what's your name?" I asked, trying to kill the silence. It wasn't disturbing at all, just too quiet for my liking.

"Jennifer. Yours is Charlie, right?" She asked, unsure. My blood started to boil, but I kept it in. I took a silent breath and tried to stay calm.
