Chapter 9

Period’s 5 &6

On the other side of the cafeteria, Jennifer and Brandon is sitting at their table listening to Charles tell a story about his ride to school that involved a small dog and his tag. Brandon laughs and notices that Derek got up from his table and is walking in their direction. Normally, he would have told Charles and teased him about it but it slipped his mind as Charles continues his morning tale with the little Chihuahua.

“…….and when I stopped the car, he ran into it. I didn’t know what to do… Get out and check on him or ju—” Charles was saying before he got interrupted with Derek’s deep voice. “Hello, McGrow.” He said, making his presence known to the table.

At that moment Charles froze, he knew that voice. He knew it so well… how can he not? Every time something has to be read in class, the only time he actually listens is when it’s read in a deep, sexy, and gruffly voice. But that couldn’t be who he thought it was. Why would Derek be talking to me? He thinks to himself, ignoring Derek’s very existence and thinking it’s all in his head.

Derek is waiting, standing behind the black haired boy. He sees no effort of movement from him and concludes that he wasn’t loud enough. “Hello, McGrow.” He repeats.

With this reiteration, Charles turns around slowly and looks at Derek. He opens his mouth to say ‘hello’ back but nothing comes out. Jennifer notices this and looks to Brandon of some sort of explanation. She doesn’t know what to do or how to do it.

The boy that walked all the way across the cafeteria starts to feel uneasy about making his presence at the table as the center of his heart stares at him, mouth open and eyes locked. He removes his eyes from the un-planned staring contest and looks down, his hope for love deflating.

Charles’ mind starts to gather up all the learning it received from kindergarten and then he remembers how to form words to greet people. “Hi…” He finally chokes out and beats himself up inwardly at the measly two letters he managed to say when his dreams just spoke twelve. Yes, he did count.

It is then that Derek falls in love with McGrow’s voice and desires to hear it more. A smile creeps up on his face as an idea pops up in his head. “What were you guys talking about?”

“Uhm….w-what had uhm, what the do—the cat…..” Charles started to answer, not even knowing what to say, but much to his luck, his best friend was on his side. “A dog was chasing his car this morning on his way to school.” Brandon says, helping his poor friend out.

Derek looks to Brandon as he answers and then to Jennifer, remembering that it wasn’t just him and Charles alone. “Oh sorry, hi you guys.”

“Yeah, hi… not to be rude, but what you doing here?,” Jennifer asks, her mind running circles around unknown answers.

“McGrow left his pencil in 8th period. I wanted to return it.” he responds, thinking of the lie quickly as he talks and turns his body back to Charles to hand him the pencil.

With a shaky arm and racing heart, Charles grabs it and shoves the blue writing utensil in his pocket, not even remembering using a pencil in the first place. I used a black pen. He remembers but thanks him anyway. Smiling uncontrollably, Derek stares at him for a long time before saying “Your welcome.”
