Detective Froman along with a few other officers, escorted Adam to a holding cell while Alice had taken me downtown for something to eat. It felt pretty nice to walk around and be some what normal for once. After all, I was locked away in a room for a year so I deserved this. Alice was trying to make small talk with me. She was complimenting me for what I did back at the station. "That was pretty brave Mai. I didn't know you had it in you." She said, a big smile on her face. It was as if she was a proud mother.
I rolled my eyes, "That's what happens when you're locked away for so long." I mumbled as I ran my hand through my hair. It felt really soft.
"Well, I'm glad you did it. You got Adam to confess." She said as we stopped at a crosswalk.
"So what now? What's gonna happen to me?" I asked her. "Well, I don't know. I think that we were able to get Adam to confess and all that before our dead line. As for now, I think it's best if we go back to the hospital and see what they want to do." She casually explained as she kept her eyes on the crosswalk sign.
"Do I really have to go back?" I whined, folding my arms across my chest.
"Don't whine. You're 17 years-old. And yes you do. Let's go." She said, slightly tugging on my arms.
I looked, seeing we could cross. I tore away from her grip, "Look, I explained what happened. I wasn't the one who killed Mark. I think I should be let go." I told her as we entered the ice cream shop.
"I don't care what you think. We'll talk back at the station. What do you want?" She asked as we stepped up to the counter. With a sigh, I answered, "Just a vanilla shake. I'm gonna go to the bathroom." I turned and made my way to the back where the bathrooms were. I stood at the sink and looked at myself in the mirror. Thousands of questions were swirling through my head. Since I told the truth, are they going to let me go? What's going to happen to Adam? He better go to prison for what he did.
I sighed, turning the tap on and set my hands under the water. It was nice and warm.
The bathroom door opened, "You almost finished?" Alice's voice said.
Sighing, I looked up at her in the mirror, "Why? In a rush to get me back to the nut house?" I snapped.
Turning the tap off, I walked over and turned on the hand dryer.
Alice didn't answer. She rolled her eyes before turning and walking out of the bathroom.
"You almost finished." I mocked as the hand dryer turned off and it was now quiet in the bathroom.
I took one last look in the mirror before exiting the bathroom. As I made my way back to the front, I saw Alice sitting in a booth. I bounced over and sat down across from her. She looked up from her phone, "What has you all bouncy?" She asked.
"I'm free. For now. Until I have to go back to the hellhole." I said as I looked around the shop.
"It's not a hellhole. Stay here while I go get our food." She said, getting out from the booth and walking up to the counter.
I rolled my eyes before letting my head fall and I was now staring down at my lap. "Excuse me." A voice said, causing me to bring my head up and look at who was speaking. It was a boy, 16 or 17. He was pretty tall for however old he was. His hair was short, light brown and his eyes were a hazelish color. He smiled, showing his pearly white teeth.
I raised my eyebrows, as if asking him 'what?'
He scoffed, laughing a little, "I can't believe it's you Mai. It's Rexton. Don't you remember?" He asked.
