On the run

All I could feel was the wind in my hair. The sun on my face. I kept running. As fast and as far as I could. I wasn't sure if anyone was behind me. Or if they even sent a car out after me. I wasn't going to chance it. I took a small glance over my shoulder, seeing nothing. I shook my head, just a little further. Looking forward again, I continued.

'Hey!' 'Watch it!' 'Watch where you're going!' Was all I heard as I ran through the busy crowd.

"Sorry!" Was all I shouted, not looking back.

After almost 20 minutes of running, I had stopped running. I wasn't sure where exactly I was, but what I did know is that I was far from the police station, and yet even further from the hospital. There is no way in hell that I was going back there. I told the truth. Adam confessed. So, there is no reason for me to go back there. I wasn't crazy. I wasn't crazy to begin with. They didn't want to hear me in the beginning, well now they won't hear from me at all.

I took a seat on some bench that was near a park. Children were running around, chasing one another with big smiles on their faces while their parents sat down and talked with one another. I was still slightly out of breath from running.

I sat with my head down while I tried to slow my breathing. I didn't care if anyone knew who I was. I knew that if there was anyone following me that they had lost me a while back. Once my breathing was back to normal, I sat up and leaned back, closing my eyes.

I am in real deep shit now.

I never had to run from anyone. Especially the cops. Well, until now. And I'm so screwed.

"Are you okay Miss?" A voice asked.

My eyes snapped open, and I slightly flinched. "Whoa. Calm down. It's okay."

I looked over, my eyes landing on a gentleman who was in his mid to late twenties. Tall, built and pretty good looking. His hair was cut short and a dark brown color. His eyes the same. I slowly rose to my feet as he asked, "Are you okay?"

I took a quick look around, seeing if anyone was watching us. "I'm fine." Was all I said before turning to walk away.

"Wait a second!" He called after me, which had me picking up my pace.

"Are you sure? You looked pretty out of breath back there."

"So what. I'm fine. Now leave me alone." I said low.

I took a quick left, still hearing his footsteps behind me. "What's the hurry?"

I only rolled my eyes and didn't answer.

He then gripped my wrist and pulled back some, causing me to stop.

I whipped around and pulled back, "Don't fucking touch me. I don't know who the hell you think are you grabbing me. Leave me the fuck alone." I spat in his face.

His hand fell from my wrist and rested on his hip, "Sorry. Just wanted to make sure you were okay."

I scoffed, running my hand through my hair removing it from my face so I could see him clearer, "I'm fine. Now stop following me and leave me alone."

Turning around, I went to walk away only he stopped me, "I'm Scott. Can you at least tell me your name?" He asked.

Without looking at him, I asked, "Why would you want to know?"

"I don't know. In case we see each other again." He answered.

I laughed that time, looking over my shoulder right at him, "Yeah right. Like we would ever see each other again. Goodbye." I told him before turning back around and walking away. Rather fast so he didn't try and stop me again.

It had been at least a couple hours since my run in with Scott. It was just weird how he was trying to get to know me. I'm pretty sure he already did know, and he was only being nice. Or he was trying to distract me while the cops showed up. I wasn't going to fall for it.

I shook all those thoughts from my head as I came to a stop. I reached a wooded area. The town I lived in had a big, wooded area just as you were leaving town. That's all there was for miles until you reached the next town. I turned some, facing the town that I had called home the past 17 years. The town I grew up in. The town I had many memories in. The town that my brother, Mark-Johnson Thompson, was murdered in. The town that was too much for me.

I huffed in sadness as I turned and began to leave town, only to stop as I heard my name being called, "Mai! Mai stop!"

I whipped back around, my eyes going wide.

Three police cars pulled up, blocking off the road. One of the passenger doors opened, and Detective Froman stepped out, along with Alice stepping out of the back.

No! Dammit! They followed me. They fucking followed me!

Detective Froman and Alice began to walk towards me. "Mai." Alice called as she stood a few feet away.

I suddenly grew mad. Angry. Furious. "What the fuck are you guys doing here?" I growled.

"We have been looking all over for you. We've had everyone out looking for you." Detective Froman spoke up as he stood in front of Alice.

"I don't care. I didn't want to be found!" I shouted at them, looking around for an escape route. There wasn't one and I was definitely screwed.

"Mai. Mai, honey. Can you please just come back?" Isabella's voice said.

I looked over Detective Froman and Alice, seeing her standing there. An officer right beside her. Only, this officer looked all too familiar.

I shook my head, "If you thought bringing Isabella here would get me to come back, you're wrong."

"What about me?" A voice spoke up.

I looked to the left of Isabella and the officer, seeing Abigail. I couldn't believe it.

I scoffed, "Nope. Not a chance." "Please Mai." She begged.

I quickly glanced over at the woods then looked back at everyone.

"Just come back to the station Mai. We can talk about everything back there." Detective Froman spoke up.

"No. I'm not going back. It's a trick. You guys send me back to that hospital, and I will never be let out." I snapped.

"No. That won't happen. I promise." He spoke.

I shook my head, "Yes. Yes, it will. And I won't let it."

And before anyone could say anything else, I turned and took off into the woods.
