Memory lane

I can tell you this, I have never been so happy to see the sun. To see big, white puffy clouds fill the sky. To hear birds chirp. To feel the nice, cool breeze in my hair and on my face. To hear people laugh and talk with one another. To be free. I stood on the stairs with a big smile on my face. I stretched my arms above my head and took in a deep breath of the fresh air. I looked up at the sky and blew it out, laughing as I did. I am finally free. For now.

"Mai." Alice said, bringing me out of my day dream.

I looked at her, the smile still there. "Let's go."

My arms fell back to my side as I walked down the stairs and followed her to a black SUV.

"I'll meet you guys at the station. I gotta make a stop somewhere, but once you get to the station, head down-stairs and ask for Sheriff Larks. He will help you get settled in and everything." Detective Alex explained as the back passenger door was opened for me.

I hesitated. "Where are you going?" I heard Alice ask. My mind began to feel fuzzy, and everything was starting to blur. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath in and holding it for a few seconds before slowly letting it out.

"I'm going to talk to Officer Thompson. See if there is anything on Adam." Detective Alex said.

My eyes shot open and my head whipped over to look at him, "Officer Thompson? My father Officer Thompson? You're going to go talk to my dad?" I quickly asked.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. Detective Froman wasn't that bad looking. He was actually really good looking. He was about 6'3", maybe 6'4". Broad shoulders and lean arms. He had sandy colored hair that was flat on occasion, but today it was slightly spiked in the front. It gave him that sincere yet determined look. His eyes were a deep, intense sea green color. And every now and then, when you look into them, and I mean really look, it's almost as if you were staring into the ocean. They were mesmerizing. He had to have been early or mid thirties. No ring. Lucky him.

"Yes, your father. You will get the chance to speak to him after our business at the station. Now get going." He said before getting into a different SUV and taking off.

I scoffed, "Douchebag." "Mai." Alice slightly scolded.

With a slight roll of my eyes, I climbed into the back and got comfortable. Alice climbed in shortly after and pulled the door closed. The car then began moving.

I stared out the window, watching everything go by. The drive was about 15-20 minutes and as we were getting closer, I suddenly began to feel anxious and nervous. Last time that I was here, I was stuck with a needle and the next day I woke up in some mental hospital.

"Five minutes." The driver spoke up.

I tore my eyes from the window, looking over at Alice. "So what's gonna happen when we get there? I'm not gonna get stuck with a needle again am I? Cause if I am, you might as well just take me back."

She looked up from reading some type of file, "No you are not going to get stuck again. That's only if you start to misbehave and when we get there, we're gonna get you some clean clothes so you don't have wear those anymore. Then maybe get you something to eat. I know you must be starving for regular food." She explained with a slight smile on her face.

"The hospital food was real shitty." I said, looking back out the window.

"Watch your language Mai." She said, going back to reading the file she was holding.

I only rolled my eyes, mocking her. Watch your language Mai.

"We're here." The driver said as the car slowed down before coming to a stop. Alice gathered all the things in her lap and held them close to her chest before she opened the door and stepped out.
