Relief surges through me as Lee leaps to his feet and raises his swords. But my relief quickly turns to shock, then horror, as my dancer raises a circle of fire around himself with an elegant twist of his swords, tossing Hon back several feet. The crowd, myself included, gasps audibly, staring at my rescuer.

         A firebender.

Lee is a firebender! The enemy!

I can barely comprehend it, and I stare, my mouth hanging open, as Lee dispatches both Jon and Hon with quick, decisive bursts of flame. He is Agni incarnate: strong, powerful, angry, dangerous, and destructive. He is terrifying.

Hon skids across the rocky ground and doesn't get up again, and Lee ignores him, turning to Jon. Jon tries to defend himself, but he's no match for Lee, who is obviously a master firebender.

Jon crashes into a building, and it collapses on top of him, trapping him. He groans, staring out at Lee. “Get him!” Jon's voice is hoarse, but the remaining soldiers gamely raise their weapons and charge Lee.

He ignores them, running to me. Several of the other soldiers have returned by now, as well, and they are headed for me. Lee gets here first, slicing through my bonds easily. “Come on!”

His voice is impatient, and he watches the soldiers and the stirring Hon warily, holding out a hand to me.

He's a firebender. The enemy. I shouldn't trust him--but for some reason I do. I take his hand, letting him pull me to my feet.

         And we run.
