Chapter 14 ~ Space

"Oh you've gotta be kidding me." I exclaim.
"Well if it isn't my favorite twin." Reagan smirks mischievously at Riley.
"Get inside, both of you." Riley growls like a mother to her misbehaving children.
We all gather in the lounge room and the apartment door closes.
Here we go.
"What the fucking hell are you doing here?" Riley snaps at Reagan.
"Oh, I just came by to see you. Everyone is buzzing about how you are staying with some random cute guy."
"Boyfriend, actually." I step in but only receive a scowl from Riley.
"Yeah, we'll see about that." She says to me.
"She kissed me!" I reply in defense.
"No regrets." Reagan admits.
"Shut up you demon spawn," Riley jumps down her twins throat, "And as if you couldn't tell us apart!" She turns at me again.
"I knew her hair was different and her eyes are darker but I just thought you weren't feeling ok. You are identical for goodness sake! It's hardly my fault! You never even thought to mention she was your twin sister!"
Emphasis on the twin part.
Reagan stands there comfortably against the couch, preoccupied by her manicured nails.
"I haven't seen you in over six months, Reagan, and you just rock up and start kissing guys I like? What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Guys?" I butt in, "Plural?"
"I just wanted to see what all the fuss around campus was about." Reagan replies calmly.
"More like you were bored and wanted to cause shit for me, like always." Riley deadpans.
"Bite me." Reagan says cheekily.
"I'll do more than bite you, bitch."
Cat fight! Cat fight! Cat fight!
.......Shut up brain.
"Guys, just calm down." The sensible side of me says.
"Get out." Riley says. At first I think she is talking to me and I'm shocked, until I realize she is talking to Reagan.
"This isn't your apartment."
All eyes turn to me and I feel like jumping out the window.
"Well?" Riley urges me.
"I... um. I think you should go, Reagan."
Reagan glances at us both before shrugging.
"I got what I came for. See you around." She smiles at Riley innocently before winking at me.
The apartment door slams shut and it's silence. I look at Riley and see that her angry guard has fallen and she looks painfully weak. My instincts tell me to hold her and comfort her but I know she is still angry at me, so I can't. And that is also painful.
"Riley..." I begin to apologize.
"Don't, Jake. I don't want to hear it." She turns away, half hugging herself with her arms.
I wouldn't call this silence now. It's more like someone stabbing me in the heart with a chainsaw.
"I just can't believe you." Riley croaks, sounding almost in tears, "You pissed off this morning without saying goodbye even after everything that happened and then I come here to try and fix things but instead you are kissing my twin sister."
"She didn't argue when I called her 'Riley'. She came on to me before I could even say anything or even look at her properly! I would have noticed if I had time to!"
Riley sighs defeatedly.
"I know it's not all your fault. But what about this morning? What's your excuse for leaving?"
"I couldn't stand watching you leave, Rye. I just couldn't. I stayed up all night because I didn't want to waste time with you sleeping."
"It's not like we weren't ever going to see each other again."
"I know but it's not the same." I step towards her.
She hesitates away from me so I stop.
"I think I just need some space." She walks around me and opens the front door.
"Bye Jake."
The front door closes and I sigh.
"Bye Riley"

"What happened?" Mare says as soon as she opens the dorm room door.
I step into her open arms and she hugs me tight. She leads me to the couch and sits me down carefully, offering me a packet of chips.
"We don't have ice cream." She explains.
I shake my head to refuse and sigh.
"This is why I don't date people." I begin.
"I warned you about staying with him." Mare says.
"I know. But it's not really his fault. It's that stupid twin sister of mine."
"Reagan? What has she got to do with it?"
"She kissed Jake."
"He couldn't tell it wasn't you?"
"Well he said he noticed differences but she was kissing him before he could realize."
"That bitch!"
"Just the thought of them kissing makes me sick."
"Well he should have realized. I mean, you guys weren't on the best terms so why would you be kissing him out of no where?"
"Exactly. Maybe he just thinks I'm that much of a player."
"I don't know, Rye." America exhales.
"I just want to go to bed." I say, getting up and going over to climb into my shitty dorm bed.
America gets up and closes the blinds on the window.
"It'll get better, Riley. Promise." She whispers
