I've hidden behind the lens of a camera since I was seven years old. My Mom dying turned me into a shell of a person; I stopped speaking, I hid behind fake glasses, my hair and baggy clothes.
I let my father move us around, never asking questions when he would disappear for days at a time from the time I turned thirteen.
The only thing that my father did that ever got the rare smile from me was when my birthday came around and he brought me a camera every year.
The camera was my security blanket, another eye that I used to see things through, another way to observe even as I pressed that shutter button.
Moving to a new town, a new school never fazed me; I never purposely drew attention to myself. I hid behind the camera, like I always did and that was when I started capturing them just like they started capturing my heart.
