It was finally daylight, the fire had died out. That was what our only light source was since Silvia wanted to save the battery of the flashlight. I sat on a log, it was a very damp mossy log since the snow was still melting in this areas shielded by the sun. Dillan sat on the ground beside the embers, poking them with a stick, causing them to glow slightly at the touch. Like I once did. He lit me up like a Christmas tree.
"How much further until we get to your brothers house?" I asked quietly, that broke the long silence that lasted for hours. She sat across from me on a stump. I think it might've been the stump that had created the log I sat on.
"A few miles." She said quietly, she kept her gaze down on the flashlight as she tightened the bulb before twisting the cap back on. "He won't be expecting me... But there's many people around who he hasn't expected to arrive."
"What do you mean, Silvi?" I asked, I was slightly confused, but mostly curious. Silvi was a nickname I had given her, a title. I loved her name. But I desired her nickname.
"He worked with the government, the FBI and whatnot, he takes in former hostages, gives them supplies and keeps them away from the news." she said softly, looking over at me. Her black hair looked shiny, had she even had a shower? I haven't had one in weeks. I stunk of blood. It was like a skunk spraying gas, but instead of gas, it was the one liquid that kept me alive, like the gas was the one thing that keeps skunks alive.
"Do you..." I paused, looking down as I thought. "Do you know how many?"
"A couple hundred over the past two years, some from the actual bombing areas." She said, looking down as she plucked a piece of grass that was growing against the stump. "Why?"
I stared at her, hope was refuelling my body as I thought. Maybe he was there. Maybe he was alive after all. "Do you know who's there?"
"I haven't been there in over five months... I know a few little girls, I had to babysit them but that's it." She said, she could raise an eyebrow, too. Great. I was the only one that couldn't do that.
"We need to hurry." Dillan mumbled. That was the first time he had spoken. He snapped the stick and then stood. But then there was a second snap. A twig snapping it sounded like. I whirled my head around as I stood. My heart was pounding loudly in both my chest and my ears. It made a ringing sound in my ears. Deep in my ears.
That's when I heard a low growl, it was almost the volume of a purr of a cat, but it was a violent purr, a bloodthirsty purr.
"Wolves." Silvia said under her breath, she had stood as well, picking up the flashlight. she stared in the direction of the growl and nodded. "Run."
I stared at her, so did Dillan. We were hesitating before Silvia ran as fast as she could, she looked like an Olympic runner. Then Dillan started, then me. My legs were weak and bruised. I was slower, and the growls only seemed to be getting closer by the second.
