Me, Melvin, and the rest of the soldiers from camp were driven to a strange location and we had to walk the rest of the way to the trenches. The Sergeants had told us that us and the Germans were in a stalemate and neither of us would leave the trench first. As we're walking I can hear the faint sounds of shooting and yelling. Is this what my father heard walking through here. The shouts of men, the sound of gun fire. It's terrible what they go through. "You okay?" Melvin asked "Yeah, I'm fine." I replied.
We finally reach the trench and we all go to search for the sergeant in charge. "Are you soldiers the new recruits?" "Sir, yes sir." We all said. "Good, I'll take you all to your rooms." He walked us through the muddy, damp, and cold trench to our rooms. I had notice a few rats and dead bodies in there as we were walking. "These will be your rooms from now on, you will each pick a roommate and pick a room. Dismissed." "Do you want to be my roommate, you're the only person I really made friends with." "Uh, yeah sure Melvin." We walk into the little room with two make sift beds, a bucket of clean water, an empty bucket in another littler room which I'm guessing is the bathroom, and another bucket of water.
"I can't wait until we win this war." "Yeah me too." I watch as Melvin pulls out a picture from his pocket. "This is a picture of my family." I take the picture and look at the people in it. The man smiling hugging a woman who I'm assuming are his parents, him, and a little boy and girl chasing each other. "They look like amazing family." "They are." I smile at him. He seems like such a sweet guy, coming to war to help his family, taking the place of his father. That love right there. "Martin?" "Huh, what?" "You okay?" "Yeah, I'm fine." "Okay, we should probably go to sleep now, we have to take the morning shift tomorrow." "Oh, okay."
I walk over to my bed and lay down staring at the ceiling. "Goodnight Martin." "Goodnight Melvin." I hope Mother and Lillie are alright. Tomorrow I will avenge father. After that thought I fell into a deep sleep.
